Garter Toss

Garter Toss

Like a lot of you, I’m not really all that into the idea of the garter toss. I was planning from the start to leave it out of our wedding festivities, certain that no one would miss it. But I was wrong. And the one who swore up and down he would miss it the most? None other than my FH.

“How can we not do the garter toss?” he questioned.

“I’ve never been to a wedding that didn’t have it!” he insisted.

The man sees no reason for linens, menus, programs, heck even flowers, but don’t take away his garter toss! So I relented. And now I have this embarrassment to look forward to-

I’ve heard a lot of stories about how the garter toss tradition started and its awful symbolism. Here’s one of those versions of the story:

“Another interesting custom dated back to the ancient times where the wedding garter represented the virginal girdle. When the groom removed the garter from the bride, this represented the bride’s relinquishment of her virginity.”

No thanks.

Here’s the one I prefer to believe:

“The garter tradition originated back to the 14th century. In parts of Europe the guests of the bride and groom believed having a piece of the bride’s clothing was thought to bring good luck. They would actually destroy the brides dress by ripping off pieces of fabric. Obviously, this tradition did not sit well with the bride, so she began throwing various items to the guests – the garter being one of them. It became customary for the bride to toss the garter to the men. But this also caused a great problem for the bride….sometimes the men would get drunk, become impatient and try to remove the garter ahead of time. Therefore, the custom derived at having the groom remove and toss the garter to the men.”

Just an innocent piece of good luck- that is my story and I’m sticking to it.

So the big question is, are you doing the garter toss or not- and why?

Re: Garter Toss

the woman at the flower place told us about this anniversary thing, where all the couples come to the dance floor, the dj asks whos been married for 1 year, 5 year, 10 year, and when your anniversary is called you leave the dance floor, and the last couple standing you give them your 'throw away' bo-k, i thought that was a cute idea

Now that you mentioned that- I don't wanna do this!

Re: Garter Toss

We are not doing it for a variety of reasons, and this is in order of importance:

1. Neither one of us like it, but actually the FH dislikes it MORE!

2. It takes up a good half hour (bouquet and garter) of your DJ time, and we've got about 4 hours of MUST HEAR music (no room for theatrics, it's our night, and we want to hear our stuff and dance to it for as long as possible!!!)

3. We aren't going to have many singles, at all, at our wedding!!! We're a bit older, and even my FH's friends, who are younger, are all married and having kiddies, so we would have almost NO ONE to participate.

I can't wait to do it!! I know its embarrasing but I always look forward to it at weddings and I know people will be looking forward to it at mine.

We haven't discussed it. But I know that we look forward to as much dance time as possible. But I also know that FH used to like doing this at weddings, with me of course. We caught it at 3 weddings. So he might be looking forward to the show at our own wedding.

I am doing the anniversary dance because there won't be a lot of single girls and guys at my wedding. ALSO, I saw someone's wedding pictures and her DH actually went up her dress! Not really something I want the grandparents to see lol! My friend's mom thinks its crazy that I'm not doing it but I would rather do that than be embarassed. Although I would really like to do the bo-k toss!

We are totally doing Garter Toss! I think it is soooo fun! I don't think it is embarrassing and I can understand why your FH wants to do it! It makes him feel special and it should make you feel sexy and appreciated! I can't wait for it!!

HTH!

The more I think about it, the more embarassed I get. I am a prude in front of my family. I would feel so weird doing this. I haven't really discussed this with Pat but I think that's our discussion tonight!

Of course we are doing it.... everyone looks forward to it... I know I do... its the interesting part and you never know what craziness will ensue.... It will not take 30 mins. It usually takes about half of that time. I think its about 15 mins between the garter and Bok toss. I think all of the guests look forward to it... especially the younger ones.... but the older ones get a kick out of it too.

We're going to do the bouquet but not the garter - the bo-q is cute, the garter can get embarassing!

We are not doing this. I am not really into the whole garter toss, bo-k throw kinda thing, but I do think the anniversary dance is cute!
