Just checked our bank account and one of our wedding gift checks ($100) bounced. So now we paid $10 for them to give us a 'gift.' Lovely.
I'd never say anything, but that really annoys me. I'd rather not get anything.
At least the regifted cookbook was funny!
I know it happens, but I was just noticing how nothing had bounced... figures!
To those who received bounced checks, did you ever hear from the offenders or get another check? I'm just curious. I'd never say anything - and it's just $100 - but it's still a little irritating, especially since we got charged a fee.
(I'm not trying to be selfish -- but c'mon people. A check is a legal instrument. Don't write it if it won't be good!)
ETA - since people aren't reading all the posts below, we are NOT saying anything to them (nor are DH's parents) and we ARE sending a thank you not for coming and for the picture frame they gave us.

Re: gee, guess it's the thought that counts
I once gave a gift that bounced, but it was only after a bank where I had just finished paying off a loan withdrew the $500 monthly payment the next month without my knowing (I wrongly assumed that the autopay would end with the loan, but it turns out I had to call the bank to cancel it). In any event, I was SO mortified when it happened that I called my cousin the first chance that I got, found out what his bounced check fee was & then sent him another card with a check that covered that & the gift as soon as I had gotten my money back from the EVIL Bank of America...
In any event, it unfortunately does happen from time to time for reasons beyond the person's control. Chances are that they'll be humiliated like I was and will call you first to rectify the situation. Just give them a few days...it took me that long to work up the courage to make the call & it wasn't even my fault!! Sorry you had to go through this though!!

I was also planning to send out my TYs this weekend, but I guess I'll wait on theirs. They also gave us a picture frame... I guess I'll wait a week to see if we hear from them, then just send the TY for the picture frame.
They definitely don't have our number (DH's parents' friends), but I'd hope they'd call my ILs. We shall see.
I know it happens. A bank error did that to my parents once, and they called immediately and sent another check with the fee x2 or 3. Just knowing these people the little bit I do, I'm not confident we'll hear from them.

we just got one from our wedding in june. i got a letter from my bank but luckily they didnt charge me. the person that gave us the check approached me and said that their bank was switching names and somehow there was an error...??? but whatever, so i redeposited it for a second time, and it went through the second time. but very embarassing for both of us. i didnt know what to say.

Re: gee, guess it's the thought that counts
i think the person is probably embarrassed enough (well, normal ppl would b) and you should be gracious about it. That is a good question though....do you send a thank you to the person if their check didn't clear? I feel it's polite to send a thank you but maybe you word it differnetly like 'thank you for sharing in our special day'? Also i would consider your relationship with the person, or your parents' relationship w/ them. How often will you see them again?

I think it would be more embrassing it that person never contacts you. Banks make errors to so it might be on their part but .

Wow- how rude.
Maybe something got screwed up in their account. Im sure if they find out they will give you a new check...well, I would hope.
A friend had a check bounce from her neighbor and the lady was mortified and insisted on giving her the fee too.
Was it someone close or someone you wil never see again?

Like I said, guys, we are NOT planning to say anything to them about it. They are friends of DH's parents... Our wedding was the only time I ever met them, so I doubt we'll be seeing them anytime soon. They live OOS.
ETA - we are also sending them a thank you card... we will thank them for the picture frame and for coming. I'm going to wait a week longer to send theirs in case they try to send another one... The $10 isn't a big deal, just irritating!

it could have been just miss calculating....that really stinks though... tell your husbands parents and let them tell their friends....
and as far as thank yous go send out the thank you they did come to your wedding so thank them for sharing in your special day....

Re: gee, guess it's the thought that counts
Once again - we are NOT saying anything to them and we ARE definitely, 100% sending a thank you... just not for the check.
I'm holding off sending their thank you ONLY to give them enough time to send another check if they want to. (If not, no big deal, we'll send a thank you for coming and for the picture frame) I found out today (and I check my accounts daily), so I'm giving them an extra week... I am sending the rest of the thank you cards this weekend.

Re: gee, guess it's the thought that counts
I have a cousin who actually gave my brother a check for $1000 for his wedding and then told me in the limo she hopes he doesnt cash it right away because there's no money in the account! I told my brother and told him DO NOT CASH THE CHECK but the jerk put it in anyway and dont ya know I get a phone call from him saying the check bounced, DUH!! Yeah money was never replaced by the cousin.

how can people give a check without the funding for it....its crazy because then you get a fee.... if you do not have the money to give simply explain your situation

Re: gee, guess it's the thought that counts
I have a cousin who did that to my brother. My father asked them NOT to say anything and they didnt (And their bank fee was 35 dollars!)
This same cousin JUST called me the other day to ask to borrow a *couple of bucks* which he has done to me before. I told him no b/c Im broke with planning my wedding.
the other day I saw him in the neighborhood and he told me he & his guest will be attendng my wedding. All I kept thinking was 'please don't... or at least dont give me a check'
he JUST asked to borrow money from me & now telling me hes coming to my wedding?
oy.... I have a feeling im paying for 2 plates...

My aunt did this to me for my high school graduation. The money was never replaced and the worst part is SHE WORKS AT THE BANK!! So she had to know it happened! Im sure she reversed her own fees and said to hell with it.. My dad still holds a grudge to this day.

actually FH gave a check to a childhood friend and, whoops, forgot to sign it!!! the friend did call to tell FH and FH did send another check, but even THAT was embarrasing. hopefully this person will call your ILs, but if not, you're doing the gracious thing by not mentioning it and sending a thank you note for the other gift and their presence. and, luckily, your fee is small. plus, better a $100 check bounce than a big check!
