My mom got married in like 1970. She refuses to understand that brides get their makeup done on their wedding day. I'm paying for it, so it's not her money, why is she being this way? She said I should just go with some lipstick??? Is she nuts? All of my cousins got theirs done and were spray tanned and all that...
Also, she doesn't like my veil because it's not frilly enough. My dress is very clean and simple, no beading or anything. Why would I then get some beaded or crystal lined veil? i'm not marrying in a church, so I got a shortish veil - check my album for photos of dress and veil.
Is anyone else clashing with their mothers or MILs? Remember, my FMIL wanted the grooms in all brown tuxedos to match the girls! W T F?

Re: Generation Gap Vent!
My main problem w/ my parents is the cost of everything. When they got married in 1972 they paid $11 per plate! So throughout the planning process they have just been in a constant state of sticker shock as they find out how much everything costs. I think they regret offering to pay now!

Re: Generation Gap Vent!
i clash with my mom and her 1974 visions daily - but more on traditions and things like that - shes just so outdated its ridiculous - my shower (according to my sister) was going to look ridiculous until she showed her pics of girls showers on here and shes got a clue now!
I just have to laugh about it now so i dont stress - moms mean well deep down - even if they dont know how to express it

I was born in 1972. Ha ha! That's so funny. Imagine $11?! Wow, that's like a meal at Panera or something.

OH NO!!!! I am having the same exact problems with my fam. More My Mother than his!! My mom is angry with me today because I said I didn't want to wear my veil through the whole reception.....Who cares?? I know that it's definitely hurtful to have these people be giving you such a hard time....I have been just 'Yessing Everyone to Death' and just doing what I want anyway - I find it much much much easier to deal with - when it comes down to it - just say you changed your mind! I've been going through a lot with my family since I've gotten engaged and moved out - If you need someone to talk to, just FM me!!
Good Luck!

I wouldn't call it so much clashing, but I get oh this is what we did when I got married. I just say that's wonderful. I would tell her, mom, please stop, this is what I want to do. You did what you wanted for your wedding and this is what I want to do for my wedding.

Re: Generation Gap Vent!
One of the things my Mom is being ABSURD about is the hotel blocks. She wants me to literally write on the accommodations card something short of 'you're paying for your own rooms, not us.' She is convinced that sending out information will indicate that WE are paying for rooms for EVERYONE. *** is wrong w/her! I told her that blocking rooms at a discounted rate is standard and that EVERYONE does this and NO ONE thinks the bride's family is putting EVERY guest up in a free hotel room!

Re: Generation Gap Vent!
I'm clashing with my mother big time in general. As far as generational gap stuff goes, she has a very plain wedding and didn't spend a lot of money. I want a chic and simple wedding and she thinks everything is ridiculously expensive but doesn't understand that prices have gone up since 1976 (she initially gave us the same budget that she had when she got married).
On top of that, we have totally different tastes in things. Again, I'm very modern and chic with a a vintage flair and she's into really kitchy and earthy things. She wanted to make my veil and make my center pieces (a potted plant in a ceramic pot she decorated) plus other things. I told her that we have different tastes and that I want to decorate it my way (I'm really not going overboard AND I'm paying for the flowers) and she said that I'm hurtful.
I'm just not talking to her at all right now, I go through my dad. A lot less stress for me.
