Genetically Modified Food - Opinions?

Genetically Modified Food - Opinions?

The Today show had a segment on this today...

Was just wondering what everyone thought about GM Foods...Whether you don't care that 70% of packaged food is GM or if you do care...If it bothers you on an environmental level and not a health level - or both or neither...and the reasons why.

Yes it bothers me!!

I don't want science messing with my food. Who knows what the long-term effects are on your body... it hasnt been around long enough for anyone to determine that yet. Technology scares me sometimes, moves too fast!! I don't even buy seedless grapes!!

See this really bothers me b/c I see how big our kids are getting and it makes me wonder why women get so much cancer and why we can't lose weight. If they use these drugs to make chicken bigger quicker, to make a cow produce more milk and a salmon to get full grown in 2 dys this scares me. Once I eat it don't I then ingest all those drugs as well. SOmetimes I wonder how come we are not sick.

Their excuse is America would starve if they did not do this. I find this hard to believe. Do you see some of these 12 yr old today, the breast and butts on them its outrageous. I do not know what the solution is.

Shamma, you read and expressed what I had on my mind... Edited to add that having come here in HS at age of 14, I was surprised to see so many larger kids!!! It was truly a culture shock (especially being a shortie that I am at 5'1')

I think of bigger kids as having beter nutrition (not so much in the choice of foods...but in the amount of food)

Like in Japan you will see many men over 6', however in most of Eastern Asia this is unusual...

although I have been trying to stay away from processed foods in general...I like to make fresh....but like they said on Today...wash everything

But we can't really wash off the hormones in the foods!!! I feel that the only way you can not have all these hormones is by eating organic, but its crazy expensive to go that route (never mind the limiting choices)!!!

Erica, washing it will not change what made it so big so quickly

Roger's sister stopped eating chicken after she realized how they treated them to make them bigger, she believes that contributed to the growth of her fibroids

right...sorry I was thinking of the organic section of the show...

Shamma...your sister should look for free range chickens...whole foods should have no hormone chickens

Re: Genetically Modified Food - Opinions?

A lot of these arguments are why I was vegetarian for so long. The animals we eat are really pumped up heavily with chemicals and hormones. The bigger they can make them, the more they can sell. Cows are even fed the meat of other cows in some instances (which lead to Mad Cow disease). So yes, there is LOTS of stuff the meat industry doesn't want you to know. Bovine Growth Hormone is used in the majority of meat AND dairy products (don't forget about dairy! The whole 'got milk' campaign is nothing but capitalism!! Of course you need calcium, but do they tell you that the enzymes naturally present in most dairy products counteract the absorption of calcium? No, of course they don't want us to know that!). which I definitely think is why newborns seem to be getting bigger every year.

Also, organic food may cost more money, but it is certainly not limited. If anything, I think you have even more options... try shopping at Whole Foods. Ideally, I'd like to purchase all of my produce there... every single thing on the shelf is all 100% organic. It might be smaller, but it tastes better and is better for you!

This is exactly how I feel about GM food. I hate that they DON'T label all food that is GM. I hate that we didn't have a voice in this either.

I'll stick to my vegetarianism - as far as the hormone situation goes...and I buy organic as much as possible.

Exactly.

Lunatrek, how could I forget about babies, look how big they are in no time.

Erica, she has given up meat 100%

cp0329 - I am a vegetarian also, but be careful what you eat, DO not eat Morningstar Farms, they use genetically engineered soy!! Gardenburger and Boca do not use GM soy.

The things that they pump into these animals is disgusting, and can not be healthy.

85% of all meat & dairy products I purchase are organic. Natural feed, cage free, etc. Better to spend $ and be safe than sorry.

As for GM foods- I try only to eat 'whole' foods- meaning foods how they are grown. I try to stay away from anything processed... PERIOD.

Re: Genetically Modified Food - Opinions?

Is there a way to find out more about these things/products. I drink Lactaid and my hubby drinks soy. I would like to find out more about what brands/maufacturers are doing this I guess it is industry wide????

Peta's website has a lot of links to other informational websites. (www.peta.org)

One of my favorites is milk$uck$.com...

I love the Mornignstar Farm Soy Dogs, btu I just can't see eating them, I am scared then when I want to have children they will ahve 2 heads (I know a bit melodramatic) But I figure if I can give up the real ones, I can pass on the fake ones too.
