What causes this? Is it what you eat, hereditary, etc? I'm just wondering since I have my GD test on Friday. Thanks!

Re: Gestational Diabetes
I have GD so here are a few of the answers that I have gotten. Yes, it can be hereditary but doesn't have to be. In fact, it could be that one of your Aunts or a grandparent have diabetes, not just your mom or siblings. But that does NOT you will have it too.
Your placenta produces horomones that can cause your body to have a hard time producing enough inslin. Sometimes a special diet can help your body keep up with the sugars, other times your body needs to have insilin injected in order to keep up.
The first test , the one hour, measures your blood sugar level after one hour of drinking the sugary juice stuff. If that number is above a certain point (120 I think it is) then you go for a 3 hour test. Often the 3 hour test shows that your body is producing enough insilin and there are no problems. Only 3% of pregnant women get GD, and even less require insilin injections.
There are NO symptons really, unless you have severe diabetes. So I felt fine the whole time. I will tell you that I gained an above average amount of weight the month I was diagnosed with it. It was weird because I was not eating lots of junk or ice cream and I felt like I was packing on the weight. That was because the sugar in my body couldn't be broken down properly and sugar just becomes fat when unused.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
This may be a dumb question but does this go away after you give birth?

Re: Gestational Diabetes
In almost all cases yes, but you do have a higher risk of getting when you get older(I had GD too)

Re: Gestational Diabetes
Gestational Diabetes is also connected to mothers who are overweight. It's not always the case but there is a correlation. That is why when someone is very heavy, they advise them to lose weight before TTC.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
i wasn't overweight and I got it anyway...I am no skinny minnie but I wasn't considered overweight when I got pregnant.
and yes, I now have a MUCH higher risk of Type II diabetes and I must get down to a skinny minnie size in order minimize that risk in the future. So I have to be on a strict diet now and after the baby is born----I hate diets.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
That is why I said that weight is not always the case but there is a correlation. The question was what causes it and this was not mentioned yet.
