i never had an engagement party and i would like to do something for our extended families to meet. We are getting married this october, so i was thinking of doing something over the summer, like a BBQ at the beach or at someones house. Something low key, and low cost. we arent trying to get gifts. we just want to have everyone meet and have a good time.
my FH and i have large extended families that we are close to. my holiday dinner / family events have about 30 people at them. same with FH. our immediate families have met, but we wanted to do something to include our extended families since we are really close to them as well. plus our immediate families have only met eachother once or twice. 95% of our extended families live on LI / NYC, so travel isnt a consideration.
do we just ask our family to come our for a party? do we call it something?
do we call it an engagement party, even though we will prob do this in june and we are getting married at the end of october?
should it be a co-ed bridal party (im not really girly and having an un-traditional bridal party would be ok with me)
i thought about doing it for a holiday (maybe memorial day / 4th of july) but we each have a family member that have a party for that occasion, and i dont think they are willing to relocate (although im in the process of asking).
ideas/ suggestions?

Re: get together for extended family?
How about a 'family get to know each other party/BBQ' I dont think you need to name it anything. how about send out invites to a bbq and say so we can all meet before the big day. JMO

Maybe in the invite, rather than saying 'engagement party'-- make it less formal by writing: help celebrate our engagement with a summer bbq... or something along those lines.
