Getting Amnio test - UPDATE

Hello Ladies

I am having my Amnio tomorrow and am starting to freak out! Need some words of encouragement from other ladies who have had it done!!

Originally, I wasn't going to do it, but my Dr. kept suggesting it because this is our first child and I am over 35!

Good luck. Are you going to find out the sex of the baby?

Half of me does want to find out and the other half wants to be surprised. My hubby wants to know though. I'll probably sit there and tell the Dr. yes, no, yes, no.....tell me, no don't - hahahah!!

I'm just so nervous about the amnio, whenever I mention it to someone - they respond with 'Why'? with a look of horror on their faces.

The way technology is now, everything will be fine. Good luck, and let us know if you find out what the sex is.

If, God forbid, anything was wrong with the baby, I would want to know early enough to plan for care and such, which I why I chose to have them (being over 35 also). Thankfully, all was fine both times.

Re: the actual amnio, I had one with both pregnancies and with 100% honesty I can tell you that it is not bad at all. I think the hype about the procedure (the 'big needle' ) is worse than it is. It doesnt hurt, it just feels like a pinch. I didnt find out the gender either time and I dont regret it for a second. We are having #2 any day now and it's very exciting still not knowing if it's a boy or girl.

Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Andrew's Chick
Looks like we do things around the same time. I am having my amnio next week. I am a bit nervous, but I know a lot of people who have had one and they said it was fine. We are going to find out if it is a boy or a girl, can't wait that long to be surprised. Let me know how it was and try not to be nervous.

Hello Ladies

I wasn't afraid of the needle - they don't seem to bother me, I was very nervous in regards to the outcome and also the chances of miscarriage 1 in 200.

Anyway, I had it done on Saturday and it was a bit uncomfortable - but not painful (the actual procedure itself). After that I felt fine. My Dr. suggested that I relax for the next 24 hours - so I did. I felt fine - no cramps or anything like that. The Dr. suggested that I go back in on Monday to check that everything was still okay, they checked the baby's heartbeat -160 beats per minute - so things went well. Now I just need to sit and wait for the test results - about 2 weeks.

Thanks for all your information.

Glad to hear it went well -- I had one also and I can tell you that the waiting for the results was worse then the actual amnio itself!!!! Those were the longest 10 days of my life!!!
