We may be swiching reception halls. We gave our hall a 500 deposit and another 1000 is due in July. I don't have the contract in front of me so I'm not sure what the policy is. I'm assuming some places you don't get it back. Is there anything we could do if that is the case, like a sob story lol where we could get it back?
It depends on the county the hall is booked in. In Suffolk, you can get your money back if its within a certain time frame. Nassau, I believe you lose the deposit.
County is Richmond..I'm not in LI. FH read the contract and he told me it said if we cancel the contract we may be liabel to up to 50% of the minimum number of people we guaranteed. What's the likelhood they will do this though? They have 10 months to rebook.
FH called and spoke with them and they told him that we are bound to this and if we cancel they can come after us for 50% of what the total cost of the wedding would be? They can sue us?
I got my deposit back from 1 place but we had it listed in the contract (that we had until a certain date to cancel with no penalty). The hall might give you the money back depending on the reason - if it's something that the hall misled you about or you were not told at time of booking. Then again, some might not. Good Luck.

A friend of a friend had an issue like that a few years back. I remember my friend telling me that her friend was worried and what she did was try to find another booking. She posted ads on craigslist and other free posting site. I don´t know if she ever got someone to replace her or not. But that may be an option i guess.
