My fiance and I would like to have our wedding ceremony at our house and will only be inviting close family.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how make it really special/unique?
So far we have only planned to have a wedding cake.
THANKS!!

Re: Getting Married At Home
I would make sure that the front of your home has lots of flowers planted and the details are thought of- such as decorating the mailbox and use paper latterns along the walkway (look in Martha Stewart for some examples). I would also consider the following: parking, bathroom needs, weather. Honestly, if you are hosting a large wedding at home it can cost you more than having it out. But if you are hosting 20 or so people just make sure to hire a waitress and bartendar so that your family is not doing work that day. Perhaps hire a small jazz band or make sure that you create great music CDs early. I would also consider having the inside full of candlelight (for the evening) to add some elegance. But becareful about scented candles, they can get overpowering and change the taste of food if positioned too close.

Michele31 - thank you for the reply! The outside decorating tips I never thought of, I was more concerned with the inside – THANKS. We are only having the ceremony (no reception) with perhaps 30 family members. And parking shouldnt be a problem since we live on a dead-end. We plan to do it at night, so we hope to be able to light the house up with candles to make it more romantic. That’s such a great idea – As far as food goes, our original plan was to only serve wedding cake and perhaps a champagne toast. Just a small gathering with hopes to have a reception in the summer after we return from our honeymoon!
I am having an at home wedding for 40 people THIS weekend! I am really excited about it (because it is the house I grew up in) but there are A LOT of things that I didn't think about until I really started planning. We are planning a noon wedding ceremony with cocktails and hors d'ouvres at the house before going to a restaurant for the reception. I didn't think about the plates, napkins, glasses, tables, chairs, food, and music we would need. I also didn't think about all the work my parents would have to do in the garden and in the house. Sometimes it does wind up costing you more to have the ceremony at home, but you have to weigh the costs against how you want the feel of your wedding to be. I wanted it to be a relaxed and fun environment, and because my FH and I are different religions, we didn't want to get married in a church. Now I am worried because it is supposed to rain this weekend, but luckily my parents house is large enough to fit all 40 people inside if it does rain. I know I have rambled a little bit, but let me know if you have any specific questons. I would be glad to let you know how I planned, and how it came off (after Saturday!)

Re: Getting Married At Home
I think if you bought some nice fresh flowers and got alot of tealight candles and set them all around this would make for a really pretty atmosphere, go to micheals or joannes crafts and get some tule, (this is SOOO cheap) and put some tule around the house with white christmas lights,,,i would serve hors devours (sp??) and basic alcohol, just rum vodka, ect.. some wine and most importantly champagne.. i would just check out sales from liquor stores.. then i would serve wedding cake and coffee...i got a cake for my first small ceremony, for 60.00 and that serves 40 people (its white and teired, smooth not whippy.) hire someone to help out.. my mom always hires this woman to help with parties, christmas... ect.. shes like 100.00 for 4 or 5 hours... and i think this would be a really nice party...(i would get my paper goods at party city .. they ALWAYS have sales on wedding supplies.)I would put some white pansies in front of the house (these are cheap at home dept or franks nursery,)and hang a pretty white flower wreath on the front door...i hope i gave you at least some ideas you can use...Good Luck!!
