Getting married in a Catholic church that's not your parish??

Hi Girls!

Ok so my FI and I want to book our reception in Garden City and find a church in that town to get married at. Problem is I'm from Floral Park and he's from Massapequa. I could get married in my church but I hate to say this - it's really not pretty. I also never attend mass and neither does he although we were both raised Catholic.

I want to find another church but I think I will have an issue considering Floral Park is so close to Garden City; it's not like we are getting married out east and need a church that's close. There's nothing I could honestly say to make my point except that I just don't like the way the church looks and that sounds horrible!!

Any suggestions on what we can do or has anyone had this issue? Please help! THX

I had the same issue. My church was refurbished after a fire and I really didn't like the way the new one was designed, it seems very cold to me. And my FI is presbyterian, so we couldn't do his church. My mom would have a heart attack if it wasn't in a catholic church. We managed to find a beautiful church and pull some string to allow us to get married there. Some churches tend to be strict, but others will just take the $500 and allow it. If there is a church you really like, simply contact them and see if they will do it. Worst case they say no and you can move onto the next....

I had the same issue, My regular parish is walking distance from the church I chose to get married in which is all near my house but my regular parish in under renovations and they are moving slowly like they doing the work in pieces. i had to just get a letter from mu parish priest giving me permission to get married at the other church (go figure that one) but thats it

this happened to me too. I didn't want to get married in my parents church for a lot of reasons, but definitely wanted to get married in a church. i called every church in the area and asked them directly if they would marry non-members. Many of them said 'absolutely not' so I just kept calling others. I found a few that didn't say no (although the didn't say yes over the phone either), met with the priests, and found one that FH and I fell in love with that agreed to marry us. It was extremely frustrating but it worked out in the end. Of course I still need to get a letter of agreement from my home parish that it is okay for me to get married there.

Something that helped me is the fact that I don't live on LI currently. I said my parents moved and we didn't have ties to any church anymore and I think that helped.

Get a list of all the churches in the area you are looking and start calling! Good luck.

Well- I had the same issue. My church was booked for the day I wanted to get married. I called a couple of churches and they said you had to be a parishiner. I eventually just showed up at the church that I really wanted even though they said you had to be a parishiner, met with the priest and he finally took me. I was so happy!!!
