This may be a short person problem...but how does everybody else do it?
I just bought two pairs of jeans in my 'new' size. This is my post-pregnancy size and it kills me that I had to spend $ on jeans I hope don't fit in three months! In the MEANTIME, I need to get them hemmed because I am a midget.
Now...WHAT SHOES DO YOU WEAR when you go to get them altered!!! Going into the Spring, I know I'll be wearing flip flops and low sandals and things - but now I will be wearing boots with heels or even flat boots. I never know how to do this without making them unwearable with certain things. Does this happen to anybody else? One time I got FIVE PAIR hemmed too short and couldn't wear them with anything except my J-Crew Flip Flops. I was so upset! I dropped $300 on jeans yesterday and dont' want to ruin them!
Any advice? It's easier with pants, because normally I am wearing nice pants with heels or something to go out in. Jeans are so different.
Sorry! I am on the opposite end of the situation. I feel like an amazon woman next to my friends. A good seamstress should have the best judgement call on the length, I go to European Alterations on Sunrise Hway in Lynbrook...

Re: getting things hemmed
Im 5,2. I get everything hemmed.
I never wear heels or tall stuff with my jeans so I may not be of help.
I do get my dress slacks hemmed to just a quarter inch over my heel. (wearing no shoes) so that I can wear heels or flats comfortably.
I may be doing this wrong.. I don't know. You're right it's always hit and miss, but i've never had a problem since i've started using this guy. best part.. he has them done literally while you wait so you can try them back on to see if its too long or too short (not that i've ever had to redo)
I use those guys next to the post office in the bottom part of Roosevelt Feild Mall.
Just my $.02

Re: getting things hemmed
I think you should first see if the jeans you bought came in short length. I have short legs, so I usually need short length pants. If they only come one length, I would suggest washing them before you get them hemmed because they do shrink a little bit.Put on a pair of loafers or in between heeled shoes. The hemline should hit the top of the shoe, right around your arch, but not hang too low in the back. Good luck

Short person here and always getting things hemmed.
I swear we shorties should all ban together and come up with our own clothing line b/c this is nuts
NY and Company (used to be Lerners) has great shortie pants. I buy all my jeans and dress pants from them and nothing has to be hemmed. YAY!!!

i feel your pain. i think i would wear the shorter shoes and then tell them to make them as long as possible for those shoes so that they will work with boots too. or maybe do some one way and some another?
i went to the ny and company site, but their 'petite' says fits 5'1' to 5'4', guess if your're under 5'0' you're s.o.l. i really would love to start my own pants line for women 5'0' and under. it's such a pain to buy pants. the most annoying this is that they assume as you get fatter you get taller! not necessarily true. so like at gap i need the size two inseam, but to fit my fat butt i need a size six, but then everything's two inches too long! arghhhh..........

Reallybehind: I am a little under 5 foot (I think around 4'10 1/2 or something, though I tell everyone I am 5 foot) and their pants fit fine on me. I wear sneakers or dress shoes with their things and have no problems.

Im not a 'shortie' im in the middle of average and short. NY&CO (a favorite of mine) has short length and that's just a tad too short. So I buy average and ALWAYS hem.. seems easier for me to take up then walk around with hi-waters.
annoying.

Re: getting things hemmed
Im a bit spoiled in this area, since my father (many MANY moons ago) was a tailor, and is basically (in my eyes ) as talented as an Armani He has made (throughout our lives) us everything from jeans to coats to skirts and blouses, and im talking with fine, impeccable details! (ok tangent over )
But he hems anything we need hemmed (and insists upon it, because we hate to bother him with this stuff now that he's getting older, but it brings him joy to be helpful to us even though we're 'out of the house'...)
Anyway, I usually just bring him a pair of pants that I want 'duplicated' and he'll hem the new pants that way, and of course make me try them on before he does the final stitch. So I usually pick pants that I wear with shoes I plan to wear with the new pants... does that make sense?
Stinks being short

Re: getting things hemmed
I have such a MAJOR problem with this... I am very short and I wear VERY high heels. so unfortunatly I have no choice but to buy certain pants and have them hemed with my heeled shoes and buy others that I know I will wear with sneakers or flip flops...
I wear ankle length at the gap and that fits like regular length for me.. good enough for sneakers ...
Express jeans come in Short.. so I buy them when they have them..
Also the limited has short length as well..
What really stinks I think is that I love capri pants, however those are like ankle length pants on me... so i even have to get those hemmed.. URGGGG...

ITA! I am also a shortie, LOL at the name! I can wear petite pants and usually don't have to get them altered. I find though that I wear a size bigger, 8P.

Re: getting things hemmed
I have lucked out with The Limited short length pants. They were perfect.
Also, a friend of mine who is about 4'10 told me about a hem that you just iron on. I have used that too.
