A friend of mine at work cancelled her wedding and she is having a difficult time getting her deposit back; well, actually getting a response of whether or not her date/room was booked. Its a very popular month and I'm sure it can get booked again, but she needed some strategies on how to handle this situation so she can get her deposit back if entittled. She says her contract indicates she will get it back if her room is booked. Any advice I can pass on to her is appreciated.

Re: Getting your deposits back
why don't you call, as a prospective client and ask if the day is available for 'your wedding'.

Re: Getting your deposits back
How far in advance did she cancel before the wedding date? If it is more than a year then she should have no problem whats so ever. I had canceled Jericho Terrace a year and 1/2 before my wedding and I would call about every 3-4 weeks as a inquiring bride and it was 1year and 2 weeks before the date I set and they had it booked for the same room and everything (I had a coworker call for me actually), I then called Jericho Terrace and asked for the money back and they said they had to discount it since it was a cancelation but that they would give me a credit of $1000 for a future affair. What other affair would I have at Jericho Terrace, its very formal. So I asked to see the sales contract of the people that booked it and they told me that I had to go down but the bookkeeper only worked from 9-4 and not on weekends so needless to say I lost $2000!

Re: Getting your deposits back
I am still waiting to get my deposit back from a place that I had orginally booked but then changed my mind. There is a law in suffolk county where if you cancel within 6 months of your date they have to give you back your deposit minus I think $100.

Re: Getting your deposits back
Thanks for your response girls. She had a friend of hers call and ask if that date/room was available and they told her they dont give info out over the phone, she would have to come in. I will have to ask her when she backed out, but I will tell her that Suffolk County rule about cancelling 6 months before. Someone told her to go to the hall that day and see if her room was in use, get evidence (photos) and take to small claims court. I'm not sure how that can work if you are invading anothers party. Thanks again girls.
