I am making a gift basket for a good friend who loves to knit. I will be getting her some fun yarn, but is there anything else that I should throw in?

:) Thanks! I don't knit so I've been trying to make sense of all the needles, etc. Is there any needles in particular that would be different / fun?

Re: Gift basket for knitter
stitch holders (look like big safety pins)
needles (large- for finishing and to work the yarn back into the garment after it is finished)
a counter (keeps track of the number of rows you have done when you're working a pattern)
place holders/markers
large safety pins (I use them to hold the sweater together when I am putting it together)
I have a 'stitch a day' calendar that my mother gave me also. Every day of the year has a different pattern stitch. (It isn't for a specific year so you can keep it going indefinately)
Hope this helps. Sound like a cool gift idea.

I like the circular bamboo needles. They don't make the clicking sound when you knit and the garment stays loose on them. If you have to put it down, you don't have to worry about getting a mark on the line were you left off.
There are many different sizes. For the patterns that I use, size 8 seems to be most common. But it really depends on what you are making. Typically- the thicker the yarn, the bigger the needle size.
Oh- I also have a needle holder that holds all of the circular needles by size.
(My mom is also a knitter. I learned from her. She likes to give me cool knitting presents for xmas.)
If you need any ideas or imput, you can FM me.

I would also love to know what you make with tcircular needles. Are there specific patterns you follow for them? Maybe when the holidays are over, you can give me some suggestions also. How wonderful that you and your mom share the same hobby. My daughter is a lefty and could never learn from me. She gave up when she was young. Thanks. Mary

I use the circular needles for all of my projects. Sweaters, scarves, blankets, etc. You just knit back and forth like you do no the straight needles. I like it because my arms don't move as much when I knit.
My sister is a lefty also. My mom taught her to knit by sitting facing her instead of behind her. She (my sister) only makes hats thought. She hasn't progressed to sweaters.
Also- I gave up when I was young, as well. When I moved back to New York, my mother would make me stop by the yarn store while we were out shopping. She was too busy to make every sweater that I wanted for me, and the rest is history. Ironically most of what I knit now is for other people and not for myself. Anyway, maybe your daughter will want to start knitting at some point. You never know.
