Gift Card Instead of Cash

Gift Card Instead of Cash

How would you react to getting a gift card instead of a cash gift at a wedding? I'm talking about a gift card to store you are possibly registered at or can buy home goods, etc at in a reasonable amount (price of plate or more).

I hear someone over talking when I was at the mall saying they were going to get someone a gift card in steado of giving them money but they were giving it in a fairly generous amount. Just curious to your thoughts.

I got gift cards to places that I registered for, but we did receive one extremely generous gift card for a store that we hardly shop at. We're at a loss of what to do with it.

If it was a choice btw the 2.. I'd rather the cash that can go into the bank and be available for whatever we choose.. savings, house downpayment, furniture, wedding loans, ect.
A gift card requires the couple to spend the money usually within a year. To me, a gift card or gift is best for a shower or E-party.

IMO i would prefer cash. It would be good if it were for a store i was registered at, but if it was for a store that i never shop at then i would think it is a waste.

Honestly we got a gift card to Target, where we registered, for a pretty significant amount. It was kind of nice--all the $$ we got just went into the bank, and after spending all our spare $$ on stuff for the wedding, we felt like we should just save. The gift card gave us a chance to buy ourselves some much needed presents We bought a wii and an extra controller and Super Mario Galaxy We didn't feel right registering for that but it was a nice present!

So, long story short, I really don't mind it as long as it's not everyone. But I also didn't mind getting gifts off our registry....so I guess I'm a freak

I would prefer the cash but that is b/c I recieved most of what I wanted off my registry, everything else was fluff just in case.

Where as....we only got part of our bathroom towels and sheets~we bought them afterwards but we still wound up going back there anyways, so a gift card still would have gotten its use.

I dont know, im on both sides really

I'd prefer cash but if it were a giftcard for a store I'm registered at, why not just buy something off the registry for the same amount?

I guess a gift card is better in this sense because the guest may not know what you want off the registry, you know? yes, you should want everything you have on there, but as your wedding gets closer, there are few things left on the registry - and a gift card would let you get only the things you REALLY want.

ITA. While cash is preferable, I wouldn't snub my nose at a GC. We got cash, gifts from the registry and GCs for our e-party and I bought lots of stuff I wouldn't normally have bought with them

As much as I hate to say I prefer the cash. If it is a decent amount and to a store Im registered at or I can food shop in..... I would be OK.

I would buy stuff for the home.

Would I ever give one? NO

I would rather cash since it would be going towards a down payment for the house.

But if its a decent amount to a store that I was registered at I guess I would be ok with that.

I just feel that a wedding gift is more of cash then gift cards.

JMO.....

I think it's fine.....especially if it is from a department store. It's even better if they are registered there.

Personally, I'd never gift a gift card as a wedding gift, but that's not to say it's a terrible thing. I would prefer to receive the cash as a gift, but if it's to a place I registered at then that's fine as long as too many people don't do that.

A gift is a gift.

But I would never give a gift card unless I didn't like the person.
