Gift Etiquette...To open or not to open???

Gift Etiquette...To open or not to open???

I recieved a gift from someone (in the mail)...I had my parent's address on the registry for all gifts to be mailed to...Since I live in a small apartment. But they are addressed to me.

Well, I got this gift and 'opened' it. It was the corningware I registered for...FH & I were very grateful and sent a thank you immediately. My parents, returned from a trip this weekend and flipped out that we had opened it. Saying that it was rude and all gifts should remain unopened until after the wedding...??? Is that bad etiquette? If it was a shower gift, the person would have brought it to the shower.

FH & I are sure that we have committed no such faux pas? What do you think???

I would've opened it too. I opened everything I received and sent a thank you right away. I think that the person who sent it would want to know that you received it.

i open all of my gifts as they come so that i can send out my thank yous right away. i dont think it was wrong to open it..many of the gifts that we have received have been congratulation gifts on our engagement.

We open them as they get here so we can send the thank-yous immediately. That way they don't get lost in the mess later and forgotten. I think you did the right thing.

I'd have opened it.

Wasn't that the whole purpose of registering early? We plan to keep it all in the basement until we get our apt.

I have opened all gifts and sent thank you's. Otherwise the person who sent it is going to be wondering if its lost in the mail. If they didn't want you to get it yet, they wouldn't have sent it.

I opened my gifts prior to the wedding too.

Honestly, I think it would have been bad ettiquette to not open and thank them properly for the gift. They know when your wedding is and if they didn't want you to have it now, they would have waited.

Thanks! I knew it! My parents are going crazy I think.

My mother said it was someone who couldn't come to the shower and had it sent to me....she said it would have been nice to open it at the shower.

I think the only reason why gifts are opened at the shower is so that the person who gave the gift can be praised and everyone else can be nosey and see what others gave.

I think that you did the right thing by opening it. If she's not coming to the shower, then you definitely have to write a thank you beforehand. If she was coming to the shower, I would say maybe you could wait (depending on when it is), but I think your mother is wrong.

i think you should have opened it... and if your mother wanted it opened at the shower, she should have told you in advance

Opening was the right thing. If I had sent it I'd be wondering if it arrived or If you liked it. Most people would call you soon after it was sent had you not sent a thank you and then you would feel silly!

as long as you sent out the thank you right away - i see no harm in opening the gift early!
