im going to a wedding in buffalo next week with my fiance. we are both on a pretty tight budget because we are paying for our own wedding this year. we are already spending money on flights and hotels.
what is an acceptable gift?
i would love to spend more than 250 on their wedding gift, but in all honesty we cant right now. im living off of loans and going to grad school, and my fiance is in college and gets a small paycheck. thats why i put 250 as the top price in the poll.
i know on LI and NYC wedding gifts are usually more generous than other parts. anyone know whats acceptable in buffalo?

I think $200 would be an acceptable gift- 100 for you and 100 for FH.

In other parts of the country it is quite normal to give gifts as opposed to money. I think you would be fine with 150.

You could always get something off their registry that would be slightly less than what you would have given them cash. It is a little more thoughtful and you won't break the bank.

honestly - i would not give more than 150 i went to school upstate and ive been to several weddings upstate they do not even slightly compare to an okay wedding on long island cocktail hour - cheese, crackers and shrimp (sometimes) people do not pay 100 per person upstate, esp in buffalo just my opinion

Where in Buffalo is it? I'm actually from Buffalo. For my friends' weddings there, $200-$250 is more than enough. They can get wedding plates for $30-$50 there. LI is definitely way more!! Have fun!!
Funny story...our friends got married a couple years ago in Utica. We put $250 in the envelope and our stoner friend (the groom) calls FH the next morning and says...'dude...I think some of your twenties stuck together...there was a lot of money in that envelope'....

You can definitely give them something off their registry - maybe you can get it on sale??? Something nice off the registry has more meaning - it's a thoughtful gift - I know I'd appreciate it !

It's good to see people from Buffalo. For undergrad I went to Buffalo State.

I'd give $200 at the minimum. If that's all you can afford, that's fine.
Whatever you give, you'll most likely get back from them at your wedding anyway.

I also went to school upstate, and went to a wedding in Albany last year...and its SOO different.
Like other girls have said, the CH was just scallops passed around on trays, while sitting at a bar.
We gave $150 combined to his friend...and I have a feeling it was one of the more generous gifts. Not that you necessarily want to give a gift based off how much they spent on the wedding, but it is not the same as down here.
I think $150 is plenty.

You could always give them a gift as opposed to money. Outside of the NYC/Tri-State area, it is very common to give an actual gift. Maybe pick something on the higher end of their registry like stemware or china.

I would say that 200 in cash is more than acceptable. A lot of our friends from out of state gave us 200 and people gave us gifts off our registry.
