Ok Ladies, Listen to this. My FIL's called & said they got a check for $10,000 to give us towards the wedding. First time they offered money. Although they have been super along they way..when we got our house bought us patio set/BBQ. They are paying for part of my shower etc.. Very generous people.
FH- He doesn't want to accept the gift. I was like Really? FH makes a VERY GOOD living so it's not like we need the money. It would still be nice to have. Can you believe??? He said maybe he will tell them half only. :

can i have the other half?
If you don't need the money, then I can totally understand not wanting to take it from the parents.

Re: Gift from the inlaws.... and then......
moneys always a sensitive topic. my inlaws offered to give us money as well and i refused to take it. we didnt need it, so i saw no point in taking money away from their own retirement. plus, i feel like whenever someone contributes, they feel like they should have a say in certain things. plus, maybe its just my own pride of going into a new family, i really wanted to show her we were going to be ok on our own.

i don't know- my parents are giving us money for our house & in my family that's a tradition, something that we will pass on to our kids also- and I know that my parents would be hurt if we turned away their generosity- will your in-laws understand you not wanting to take it?

Re: Gift from the inlaws.... and then......
i know my FILS plan on giving us a certain amount - its not 10K though but its a few thousand - they told my FH they want to give us the same gift they gave his sister....now we can handle the wedding 100% ourselves without their gift - but i would be lying if i said it wouldnt help - i dont think my parents are giving a gift at all so getting any gift would be really nice - kwim? especially since this wedding is exhausting all of our money - we are paying for it all in cash and its been, well crazy - we are also trying to get a house so the gift would really be going towards the downpayment of the home and not the wedding - but since we are kind of doing both at the same time its all the same difference
we do feel bad though because his parents have been generous with us - i know for my shower FMIL is going to go nuts and they dont have it easy either - that money should be going to pay their debt instead of us - but his parents WANT to give it to us, thats the kind of people they are.....they rather give to their kids and be broke - my parents are the complete opposite
so i don't know, we'll probaby accept whatever they give us - if its not what they initially told my FH and its less, it will still be so so so much appreciated....

My parents gave me money already to cover most of my vendors and we are paying for the remainder. I understand your husband not wanting to take the money esp. if he makes a good living but, I also understand you wanting it :) I would just let FH decide since it's his parents. If they insist on giving it to you tell them to hold onto it for when you REALLY need it.
That is so sweet of them though!!!

You might not need that money now but it's always good to have....I feel that the older generation wants to help the younger generation. Why not take it and put it into a high interest account. Someday I think you'll be happy you have it. Especially since they are generous enough to give it to you...

i am really not one to look for help in the finance area.. but somehow now with this whole wedding thing its a little easier to accept gifts LOL
i understand his pride in not wanting to accept it.. but lets face it.. when is the next time your or his parents will give you a gift like that? maybe for your children when they are born (if you want them) but other than that.. your large gift getting days are over LOL
if he doesnt want it for the wedding.. put it in a high yeild savings or something.. right now cd's and such arent worth much.. put it away twords a new house someday.. or whatever you may need.
