I don't know how to handle this. We had our e-party last weekend. And for some reason the caterers removed all the cards from the presents and put them separate. Now, i have a stack of card and a stack of presents. I don't know who gave us what now. Alot of the stuff is off our registry, would Williams Sonoma tell me who bought what? What about the stuff I didn't register for, can I just do a generic thank you instead?? TIA.

Re: Gift Problem
How rude of the caterer's to do that! You could ask the store you registered with to help you, but they may not even know or be unable to tell you due to credit confidentiality!
I would suggest a typical thank you to the guest for coming and for the wonderful gift and don't specify much more from that. If you have a memory from the e-party, then share that in the note as well.

Re: Gift Problem
I have no clue if this is bad etiquette or not, but what about explaining real quick that the restaurant did what they did....

I would simply explain the 'boo boo' to your guests and ask them if they don't mind telling you what they bought so you could thank them.

I was thinking that it might be a credit confidenital thing. But, we did have a photographer, so I was thinking of sending each person a picture of themselves with the thank you, hopefully, that will distract from the fact that I have no idea what the heck they gave us. A memory in pictures is good. People love pictures of themselves, so i made sure the photographer took a picture of every couple and/or family. Thanks for your help.

Re: Gift Problem
I would write a general thank you to everyone.
I am so sorry the CH did that! I can't even imagine what they were thinking to do something like that - actually that is the problem, they were not thinking! Sorry!!!!

Re: Gift Problem
I can't believe they did that.
I think the picture idea and the generic thank you is fine. Like thank you in celebrating our engagement with us!

Re: Gift Problem
Wow, that was really stupid of the catering hall!! So sorry about that--they just were NOT thinking clearly!!
I think all the ideas that other brides suggested so far are great. I like the idea of explaining exactly what happened to some of the guests (close ones) and say the gifts are more meaningful when you know who gave them to you. I also like the idea of (maybe with some of the more distant/not-so-close guests) of writing more of a general thank-you and sharing a memory of the party is a great idea!! this way you still feel like you are giving some a personal thank-you and others probably wouldn't know the difference (and you are not driving yourself nuts trying to figure everything out).
Good luck and I'm so sorry again that happened to you!!!

Re: Gift Problem
If it happened to me I'd explain what happened..my family tends to be very understanding and it wasn't your fault anyway! I'd also write to the catering hall and tell them how displeased you were that this happened.

Re: Gift Problem
I would definately ask the close family and friends what they gave me by explaining how the ch screwed up royally. I'm sure you would love to know who gave you what. These gifts are special and you always want to be able to remember who gave them to you. The one's you can't figure out you can always do the generic and a picture that is a special touch.
