I havent posted on here for a while but I was hoping one of you could answer a question for me. I am going to a destination wedding in the bahamas over the summer. My husband and I are paying for our own flights & hotel. So the question is, do you still give the same gift? TIA

Re: Gift question
my FSIL got married in vegas, i know my FH and I gave what we could afford, but a lot of people gave significantly less than she expected, and some did not give anything at all, although they went to the wedding as well as the reception and received a favor (her favor was a ten dollar slip to the palms casino, that way we could all go after the reception and gamble together, very cute).

Re: Gift question
FI and I went to a destination wedding recently and gave a gift equal to what wewould have given if it was in the states. Even though we paid for the flight and hotel. The bride and groom treated all the guests to the rehersal dinner, a reception, and a farewell brunch the next day. FI and I actually made the destination wedding into a mini-vacation for ourselves. We flew out a couple of days prior to the wedding and spent it out there having fun and relaxing, so we saw it more like a vacation with a bonus wedding afterwards!
But I do know that some of the guests that had attended the destination wedding did not give my friends a gift at all.
I guess give what you can, the bride and groom would always appreciate it.

Re: Gift question
i guess the answer to that has to do with where you are financially. personally, if i were going to a destination wedding for someone close, my pockets would be a bit deeper and my arms a bit shorter after incurring all of the expenses to make it to the wedding.

Re: Gift question
it depends... i guess if you're going that means that you're close to them, but i really think it depends on the situation. i have a friend that went to a wedding where they had to pay for everything! it wasn't even an all inclusive place, so it added up really fast!! they still gave a gift, but i don't think that i would have.
people have to understand that if they have a destination wedding, they cannot expect everyone to come, or to get the 'usual gifts'.

Re: Gift question
My FH and I went to a wedding in Hawaii and gave the smae gift we would have given if the wedding was in NY. they hosted a meet and great, a dinner the night before, a lunch/tea, and the wedding. So it was a vacation with some free meals.

Re: Gift question
I would say try to at least give what you would spend on dinner that night. It might be tight with the other expenses but then again, you are getting a trip out of it.
Personally, I would never show up completely empty handed.

Re: Gift question
I guess our wedding is a destination wedding for some of our guests. FH's family lives OOT in Florida, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. A lot of our friends are spread across the country too.
All of my family lives in NY, as do a lot of my friends.
We're trying to keep costs down for people -- we booked inexpensive hotel rooms, they are waiving the extra person fee (so hopefully our friends can bunk up together) but it will still involve travel.
I'd hope people would still give us gifts, especially since FH's family members are spending a few days in NYC before our wedding and turning it into a vacation as well.

Re: Gift question
People usually do give similar to what they would given if it wasn't a destination wedding.. but if also depends on your financial situation..
