gift with thank you

So we are getting gifts in the mail and also checks from people who are not able to make it to the wedding. We know these are wedding gifts and I have already sent a Thank You card for them (I write one out the night it comes and then send it out the next day so I don't forget )

The questions is, why do I have to send them another thank you after the wedding?

I have done a search on LIW and everyone keeps posting that you should send a thank you when you get it and again after the wedding.

I don't get it. If I got two thank you's months apart for the same gift I would think 'Ok, maybe they forgot they already sent one'

What do you think the reasoning is? I just don't want to be some big faux pa and then look tacky. TIA

I won't pretend i'm an expert - but my guess is typically after wedding thank you cards come with a small photo - so everyone that gave a gift deserves to get one.

We only sent a second thank you to people who sent gifts early and then came to the wedding. Since they were at the wedding, we wanted them to have a picture, but we also didn't want to wait too long to send them the initial thank you card.

It is customary up here to send photos with the thank you's? I've never seen that before I moved here. Just wondering, but that would make sense as to why they would get the second thank you.

yeah a lot of photographers include thank yous and wallet size photos in their packages.
