Ok so I am not from NY. I was raised in NM and am now having to plan my wedding from California to have in NY. I was at my FH aunt's house and she informed me and kind of teased me about having a gift table at the wedding. I didn't know that a gift table was unheard of by NY traditions. She said they only give envelopes with money. Could someone then clarify to me what the gift registry is for???

Re: Gifts
So then I they give me China as a bridal shower gift also? Then why am I required (FH Mom made me) register for so many things when I won't have that big of a bridal shower?

Re: Gifts
The registry is really for your shower, but I did recieve SOME gifts at the wedding. (not that many) So you may still want to have a place set up where gifts can be placed.

Re: Gifts
Some people may send you wedding gifts to your house before or after the wedding. Usually people just bring envelopes to the wedding, rather than large gifts. However, I have seen tables full of gifts at Long Island weddings.

Re: Gifts
Ok so where I come from people actually bring gifts and don't just give money that would be the requirement for the gift table. I have so much understanding about these east coast things they do.

Re: Gifts
Sorry if this repeats what's already been said but...
I think that for the most part we tend us the registry for: 1) Engagement gifts 2) Bridal Showers gifts 3) Gift when you cannot attend wedding (although a lot of people still give money in that situation) 4) Holiday gifts for the couple before the wedding

Re: Gifts
Where in NM? I've been there quite a few times...
The registry has been a totally bizarre concept for me and I'm a local. Although I understand its 'purpose', I really still do not like the practice. But like with everything else, I am definitely not 'the norm'.
One can have different types of registries. A bridal registry for your shower and/or a wedding registry for wedding gifts. It can be one big registry with items ranging in price so people can buy multiple items for multiple events (engagement party, bridal shower, wedding). People set these up to make it 'easier' for everyone. Bride and Groom get what they want and guests don't have to worry if they are going to 'like it'. Also, you won't be 'stuck' with 20 vases and candlesticks.
When one registers, the items are usually shipped to the address of the Bride/Groom so that they are not forced to lug gifts from reception to home. It's true a lot of people in the North East give ca$h gifts as it is not considered rude to do so.
We will most likely not have a registry. We currently live in a small apartment and have everything we need. If people do want to give gifts, we will have our family mention that we are looking into buying a home in the near future and are saving towards a down payment. A gift towards that sum would be wonderful. I do not feel comfotable saying 'i want' or 'give me this'.

Re: Gifts
I am from Farmington. Its a small town near the Colorado border. Its about 3 hours NW of Albuquerque.
Thanks for the info on the registry. I just think if what she says is true and they all give money, then the registry would be senseless, especially if we have been living together for 2 years.

You can now register for differnt things such as your honymoon or a down payment towards a mortgage...plus you can always use new things, can't you?????

Re: Gifts
I told my mom about it and she just kind of looked at me like that sounds nice but some feel more comfortable giving you a gift of their choosing, so I will have a gift table also.
What are you using to collect the envelopes thought? A basket or something?

don't know Farmington, but i've been to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. My mom's best friend lives right outside of Albuquerque.
Love NM...
don't limit yourself, do what you feel comfortable with and give people options. you may just want to put a few items on a registry for those who want to buy a gift but don't know what to get you. you don't have to advertise it, but if someone asks you can answer...

I've seen people use baskets. There are bridal bags sold for this exact purpose. Seems like the boxes in the shape of wedding cakes and bird cages seem to be all the rage now. Do a search on here for 'card boxes' and you'll find plenty of examples.
