Gifts received a 'credit' in your budget?

We are in the early stages of planning and are trying to set up a skelton budget to work off of. Is it acceptable to 'guessestimate' the anticipated monetary gifts into your budget?

Your thoughts please girls!!!

imo - i would not count on the gifts as part of your wedding budget. don't go into it thinking you will make xx amount of money, you won't. this sounds harsch and i know girls will disagree, but your wedding is not a fund raiser for you and fh. people are going to give what thye can afford, the idea of 'covering your plate,' is all but gone

My FI was doing this but my mom made a good point you never know how generous or for that matter CHEAP people will be. My mom said that when she got married someone gave her a $5 bill and 5 singles...Granted that was 30 years ago but the point is to not really expect. Most likely the very generous one will off set the cheap ones but you never know...I mean its awful to even talk about this because you don't have a wedding to get gifts but its something you need to take into consideration

i definitely wouldnt do that. FH and I decided to not even think about monetary gifts, therefore, we decided to put off our wedding for two years just to save without breaking hte bank. Make a budget of what you can afford and work from there. You dont want to assume anything and then get yourself into any financial troubles later on. Best of luck with your planning:)

We place that in the back of our minds, but don't forget - you don't get that till AFTER the wedding. You still have to come up with that money beforehand!

I wouldn't. I'm not condiering gifts AT ALL. That way when you get them it'll be all gravy to you. You need the gift $$ to start your life togethr, not to pay for the wedding. it'll keep you from going beyond your means. And the gift money will be a las resportin case something comes up and you can't afford it how you originally intended

We're not counting on gifts from our wedding to pay for anything, except maybe worse case scenario the balance of the photography. You just never know what you're going to get.

Pls dont count yr wedding gifts as part of the wedding payoff amount. Try to budget without it as you may not make what u think & really be upset.

Alot can change in a short amount of time for people - the economy can change people can lose jobs etc - my parents counted potential gifts as part of their budget and ended up receiving alot of IOUs from loved ones it doesnt mean there cheap its just hard sometimes!

You can't count on the 'wedding gifts' bc you will not receive them until AFTER everything is already paid for!!! We are just thinking of our 'wedding gifts' as our emergency money that will be saved in case we need to repair something in the house down the line
