Girls buying or have bought houses....

Original post by HotAir

I have no intention to buy a house before the wedding because I can't even imagine being able to afford the wedding...

Anyway, how long of a process would you say it is? If I have no intention of buying anything until maybe 6 months after the wedding would it be worth doing anything now?

I guess what has me thinking is that there is a house that I saw that I liked (didn't really see it...saw it online). Would it be worth getting pre-approved? I can't do anything until a while after the wedding.

Nassau or Suffolk?

im thinking suffolk but def not too far from the border... i doubt we can afford anything half decent in nassau... and doesnt suffolk have some kind of $$ loan or other incentive to buying out there?

There is the tax credit up to $8000, but I thought that was on all homes. I could be wrong though.
I'm not too keen on western suffolk but I DO know that I would not look in Bay Shore, Central Islip, Amityville, Brentwood, Wyandanch and some parts of Farmingdale and Huntington. But with Farmingdale and Huntington you have to know your areas. With the other towns it's just a matter of personal preference, I would not want to live there.

Wow, I grew up in Amityville and you have OBVIOUSLY not ever been there because if you're thinking about NORTH AMITYVILLE that USED to be bad back in like, IDK, 1980, then you're sorely mistaken. Amityville Village is by far one of the best and cutest towns on LI., very Sayville-esque.

Sorry but I friggen HATE when people bash places on LI. If you've never lived there how on earth can you pass judgment????

Wheatley Heights is Wyandanch and I, personally, would not live in either town. Same goes for Amityville.

I used to live in Deer Park. I lived in the West numbered streets area and it was nice. Very quiet. Some parts of DP are shady though.

yes, those are prob the only towns that i know are not too good... we checked out some new condos in DP but they looked like they should have been built in a more residential area... not off a main road... big turn off altho they were nice

I know the condo's you're talking about. My Aunt bought one. They are VERY nice. But they're right on Deer Park Avenue. Very strange.

also- there are undesireable parts of almost every town
what i suggest doing is if you see something on trulia or mlsli drive over to it and see for yourself. if you like it from the outside in the daytime then drive by there at night and then if youre still liking it then contact the agent.

i've lived all over the place and i know that things change from block to block- you cant judge a whole town just by a few blocks in it, ya know?

good luck!

This is true. Even nice towns have some not so nice areas. I've lived in 4 different towns within Suffolk County and they all have their not so nice areas. You def have to do your investigative work.

Depending on your price range, there are some VERY nice condos in Smithtown, and there are really no bad areas at all. Ahh, my perfect little bubble, so sad I'm going to be run out of town

Re: Girls buying or have bought houses....

I would start looking, mainly because you want to look at a bunch of houses before you put in any offers so you have something to compare them to. You don't know when your getting a good value unless you have seen a bunch. We looked for almost a year before finding a home we loved.

Because we can afford the homes (some of them), but not the taxes. I have a feeling we're going to end up in Northport/East Northport, which isn't bad AT ALL, just not my comfort zone, and I don't like change lol.
