Girls that have done a non-stop flight from NY to Hawaii??
How bad was it??
I hate flying, and can barely do three hours, but DESPARATELY want to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon, and trying to get over the fear.

I'm a frequent flyer and I'll tell you that anything over 8 hours, you should consider upgrading. Hawaii is 12 hours. I flew to Hawaii through a connection flight in California (6 hours each) and it made me zonked flying in coach seats.
I have also flown to Japan 17 hours with a connection, BUT in first class. (I was able to do it my using miles). MUCH BETTER!
If you can I HIGHLY recommend considering business class, especially if you are not a great flyer. There are a few ways you can do it to save money. You can buy the miles you would need on American Airlines. They are actually having a 30% sale now, where you can 30% more mileage for every 1000 miles you buy. OR you can see if your AMEX rewards points or any other rewards points add up.

The first time we went to Hawaii we flew coach and stopped in LA. It wasn't bad on the way to LA becaus the flight was relatively empty but LA to Hawaii was booked solid and it started getting to me.
Last time we went we flew first class. We had a layover in Phoenix. It was much more bearable and I was actually able to sleep on the plane.
For the HM, we are going first class again. Our layover is in Atlanta which means we have a 9½ hour flight from Atlanta to Hawaii, which seems long, but FH was dying to fly in the upper deck of a 747 so that's what we had to do.
It's a long flight, but it's totally worth it when you get there. We usually take a very early flight so we arrive around 3 pm in Hawaii. I try not to sleep the night before so I'm conked out on the plane and it doesn't seem as long.

DH and i just did this flight a month ago from Newark to Oahu. It's only 9.5 hours, not 12 and it really wasn't that bad. Upgrading would be lovely, if you have the cash. It adds several grand to the ticket prices, and for us it wasn't worth it. I have some status with the airline and we were towards the front of economy, and honestly it was fine. the seats are pretty roomy, you have your own video screen. you have like 5-6 movies to choose from and it's easy to be distracted. the one thing i will say - the food service stinks. there barely feed you, and on such a long flight that's no fun. so be prepared for that

I did it once. I hated it. I reccomend stopping in LA. Its easier that way and the flight wont take so much out of you.

I flew to Hawaii when I was in HS and we had a layover in LA. Honestly I dont know how I would be if I had to sit in a seat for 12 hrs. I know the layover adds time but I loved to me able to be free for a little bit of time.

i have flown (coach) to Hawaii with a stop over at LAX. i dont think i would have been able to fly straight through. i started getting ancy, especially on the way home because my friend and i went out drinking the night before and didnt really sleep- thinking we could pass out on the ride home, but that didnt work out so well.

NY does NOT have a non-stop flight from NY. The closest Non stop flight to Hawaii is Newark Airport.

i HATE flying too but if i have to, i prefer the direct flights regardless of length. i'd rather get the whole thing over with than having to stop and get off and one etc. also had a bad experience with lost luggage once when i had to take a connection..my bag didn't make it home til days later...and it was in pieces. (only a concern if you need to switch flights and aren't staying on to refuel!)

girl, i'm with you. I HATE flying and have a huge fear of it. FH and I really want to go to Hawaii, but I keep trying to talk him out of it all because of the crazy long plane ride. I keep trying to tell him we should go to St. Lucia instead, but he doesnt seem to be having that! I've never been to Hawaii and have heard such amazing things...I just dont know if the anxiety beforehand will be worth it

I can tell you from personal experience that any anxiety beforehand will be worth it once you get there! It is simply amazing. Take a sleeping pill or a valium or xanax before you get on the plane. It is just incredible.

yup she's right, I just booked my tickets non-stop from Newark. personally, i will only ever fly non-stop, i can't stand stopping, getting somewhere walking around then getting back on a plane....for me its just too much to stop, so we prefer non-stop.

What airline did you fly out of Newark?
Continental is the only airline that has a non-stop from Newark to Honolulu.

I just took continental 2 weeks ago..it was horrible for us because we expected better inflight entertainment..i say pop some pills or bring a book or mp3..the screen *****..the movies suck..the games suck..and don't fly the very next day..u will suffer...good luck

I've done a 12 hour flight before. To Hawaii, I'd probably rather just get it over with all at once. But, FH prefers a layover to stretch his legs, etc, so we're stopping at LAX. Plus, I wanted to fly on AA to get miles.
Honestly? It's going to feel long either way. You just have to psych yourself up for the trip and go!

I flew to Hawaii and had a layover in LAX. going it was fine, because it was nice to get out and stretch. coming home was a different story. our flight from oahu left 2 1/2 hours late which caused us to miss our connecting flight back to NY. fortunately we were able to get on the next plane, but were separated. if you do a layover, just hope you have enough time in between flights to allow for a delay.

I've done the direct flight out of Newark....it was fine. I would rather this versus a layover. If you're afraid of flying the take off and landing is when you're at most risk, would probably stress you out.

JMBPTK and anyone else who is considering ruling OUT Hawaii due to the long flight: It is 110% worth it.
I visited there and ended up living there for almost a year because it was SOOOOO amazing. I have traveled extensively, 25+ countries, and no other island destination COMPARES to Hawaii. Its not just scenery and beaches- its the laid-back Hawaiian attitude, lifestyle, philosophy and culture. I would HATE to see anyone rule out Hawaii just bc of the flight.
I have done it direct flight, its really not that bad- pop a valium or sleeping pills, take a nap and BOOM- you wake up in Hawaii.
