We finally got a bid accepted after looking for over a year and many bids getting rejected...so now we are looking into banks and brokers for the best rate
Who have you used?

Re: Girls who are buying or bought homes
I'm using wells fargo. I looked around and they have one of the best rates in the market. Its pretty low now, its a little less than 5%. Not sure if you done so already but you should go for a pre-approval and get a good faith estimate now. So you have an idea how much they will lend you and how much additional money you will need to come up with (factoring in closing cost, taxes, % down, lawyer fees).
FYI....alot of the banks are requiring a minimum of 25% percent down (in light of current market conditions) if you can't do that much down they charge a fee. Make sure you inquire about that.

Bank of America. They have a no-fee mortgage solution. And there really were no gimmicks.

Our pre-approval is through Bethpage Federal - I think their rates are now between 4.5 - 4.75%. We're not sure if we are going to be using them when we actually find a house though. FH has a friend who is a broker who says he can beat their rates.

I think Teacher's Federal is pretty low too, and we will probably go to them to see what we can be preapproved for.

We're using a broker thats shopping it to all the big banks for the best rate...I can forward his info if you'd like! We're still more than 60 days out from closing so we haven't locked in yet.

Re: Girls who are buying or bought homes
I was told that you should go to a bank to get a preapproval for a mortgage BEFORE you place a bid, that way you know how much you qualify for? I could be wrong though... Anyone??

We used BOA also. The broker we worked with was excellent. He answered every e-mail and silly question we had. As first time home buyers we had a lot!

FH went to BOA and they took FOREVER to get back to him and basically ignored him or gave him an attitude any time he went into the branch or spoke to someone over the phone. He eventually got pre-approved and then they told him the amount.
We got pre-approved together from our broker.
I would suggest getting preapproved beforehand because you might have your heart set on a house, and come to find out that you cannot get a mortgage for it.
Good luck! Its a fun filled process, buying a house!

Re: Girls who are buying or bought homes
We used Chase - as we have our accounts there and have a strong relationship with the bankers there. Great service, attention to detail, and quick on responses to e-mails/calls and questions

Astoria Federal Credit Union in November 2007 at about 6% which was really low then, we're looking to refinance now at 4.5

Re: Girls who are buying or bought homes
I will note though that for us to even get information about a mortgage with them and apply we had to open an account with them so maybe they aren't the best...
