girls who have had their 1st fitting...

So I went for my 1st fitting last night, sorry no pics, but left so angry!!! they ordered me a bigger size which is HUGE on me, and now they are charging me $450 for alterations?!?!?!

Is this insane or is it just me? They knocked down the price a little cause we fought it and were so angry, but its still wayy too much!

Wow!! That's a lot. Wasn't there a price cap. My cap on alterations was $275 (I think but I am positive it was in the 2s)

nope, no price cap which is CRAP if you ask me. My moms dress doesn't either, so now Im worried about hers! She got hers at totally you....

Yes, my seamstress actually pointed it out to me. She asked what size I was and then why they ordered me such a big size. I know they measured me and checked with the manufacturer. I would like to think it was because I lost weight. I wasn't surprised that they charged me for it, so I didn't even make an issue of it. I would rather the dress be loose on me than to small.

Did they tell you what size they were supposed to order? If they did I would def fight about the cost of the alterations. Its such a scam to make them more money!!

They originally measured me at the smaller size. And then when i went to get measured for my hollow to hem, they told me i would need the next size up. I told them it would be big on me but they insisted. So they ordered it bigger and I kid you not, its HUGE on me. they have to take a good amount in so they are charging me..
I mean I somewhat understand hte french bustle being 150 but the rest of it is insane. They finally came down to 385 total for everything which im still not happy about!

i just came back from my first fitting at macys. over $400 for alterations. AND they made my 'sign off a waiver' on ordering this size because they told me I'm actually a size bigger!!! if so, why $400 of alterations@!!@!

Oh I hear you on this!!! This was my vent 2 weeks ago!!! My alterations were $430!! I got them to knock it down..All that is being done is the hem and taking it in in the bust. I don't understand why the price has to be so high!!! I thought it was going to be in the $300 mark!!! The bright side to this is I don't have to pay for the full alteration until I pick my dress up. And that is the day before the wedding...so I'm okay!!!..Still it's insane!!

That def. sounds like a lot - Try threatening them with a horrible review on LIWeddings...they know what it is!!! You know they are lurkers!!!

Your dress will be fine - dont worry! they can take it in....maybe you could go elsewhere for alterations???? just take the dress and run perhaps??

I went for my first fitting yesterday....It was a little small, but no biggie! I'll lose a couple and they'll take it out a little! It Can be Done!!!

ugh my dress is really big too - and its from macys so i probably will have the same issue

Re: girls who have had their 1st fitting...

I thought of taking it to a private seamstress...but I don't want the hassle of going back and forth cause I need somwhere to keep the dress till the wedding. Plus what if something goes wrong..what if it's a shady seamstress and I never see my dress again!!! I'm paranoid like that! I rather keep it at the place, unless I knew someone and trusted them 100% to do the alterations on my dress!!

I would also make sure that since you have to get such drastic alterations you are not loosing your detail....that they should compensate for that then

That's ridiculous!

My dress is slightly tight in the back, but fits perfect everywhere else. The designer opted not to put me in a larger size as she said that the larger size would have required too much work which would have ruined the integrity of the dress.

Sounds like some dress shops are more concerned with $$$ than with making sure that their clients are happy and beautiful. I would definately call them out on LIWeddings and save another bride the grief!

Re: girls who have had their 1st fitting...

does that include your bustle and the hallow to hem?

my bridal shop has an alterations cap, a separate bustle cap, and they charge for hallow-to-hem (which counts as part of the alterations).

we ordered my dress up one size and then i lost weight, so the top needed to be taken in. they also did a hallow-to-hem (charged $100 for this but was told any add'l length alterations would be free of charge) and my dress came in 3' too short! luckily they fixed that without charging me (my dress has a bubble hem so they were able to add a panel to the inside without it being visible from the outside)

i dont remember the exact cost of my alterations but it was way way below their cap, just the sides being taken in + $100 for the hallow-to-hem (which i paid for when i ordered my dress) and then my bustle which was only like $60? and then cups, which dont count as alterations but werent too expensive.

if you have a complicated bustle, a hallow-to-hem, and lots of alterations i can see it adding up

I had a similar situation. She ordered my dress to size (most places order a size bigger) and now it's too tight. She has to take out the dress and I'm being charged the maximum for alteration ($300) I ended up shelling out over $400 with the cups and undergarments. I was almost in tears because this wedding is so expensive I don't have $400 for all this. I know how you feel!
