Girls who have started their own small/side businesses...
How in the world did you get started? I have some great ideas and I know I have talent based on what others tell me, but I don't know where to begin. I'd prefer not to get into the specifics at the moment, but would be providing a service to people. So I know I need to start with friends and work on references from there, but does anyone have any other ideas?

is there a 'final product' in your services or ONLY services?

There's a product, not just services!

Start by looking at books about making business plans. I have 2 small businesses, both of which are service oriented, but they are very different. My first business is my full time work and it's what I went to school for. That is the longer running business, as the other one is quite new. At the time I started my first business, my concern was startup costs and making a budget for that. Good luck.

Start by reading any books on the product. Are you selling/distributing or making and selling?
Then study your market. Who, where,etc.. is selling your product?
How much will you have to invest/buy to start your business? Think about everything (or try!!!). New computer, equipment, etc
Do you have the space? What are the permit/regulations in your town?
Those are just basics. After that you will have to find how much to sell your product for, marketing/advertising for your market, etc..
