girls who know IRS law or accountants or anyone!!!

what does this mean...

Tax-qualified dependent child (A dependent as defined under 26 U.S.C. Sections 104, 105 and 106)

?????

I am looking to go back to school full time and possibly stop working, but to go under my mothers health insurance I need to be tax qualified whatever in addition be being unmarried and under 25, which gives me until 2 years to stay on her insurance before i get married...
Anyone have any clue as to what it means...I wasnt claimed as her dependant last year, but i dont know if that matters...

i think she does have to claim you, not 100% sure but if i remember correctly thats how it is. Hopefully someone can tell you 100%

I did this YEARS ago probably when i was about 21 or 22. They want to see also that youre still in school so you're gonna have to show proof of this, thats the only way to still receive health insurance from her. If you are under 25 but not in school then they won't do it, at least not the health insurance we were going through. I read the booklets the company gives you and it had info on this about who they insure and what you have to do.

Again, i had to do this about 7-8 years ago so dont remember exactly everything but I do know I had to show proof I was in school otherwise I couldn't get it.

you will be tax-qualified if you are attending school full-time, not married, and i thought 22 and under, but you said 25 so the age might have changed.

if you do go under your moms health insurance, you can not file your own tax return for that year...you mom would claim you as a dependant

i think its always been 25, i did this 8 years ago and i remember it saying you can go under your parents health insurance up to the age of 25 ONLY if you are a full-time student. Forgot to mention that above, you cant go part-time.

The age actually depends on the insurance company. Some say up to the age of 23 and some 25 but all the other criteria is the same.

I believe by tax law - your parents can claim you as a dependent until the age of 25 as long as you do not make over a certain amount and are not married. As for health insurance, that depends on the company, it varies.

Gaby, if you don't get health insurance, then I would recommend going under your parents and have them claim you, this means you will not get the tutition tax credit on your return. If you do have health insurance then I would suggest doing your own return so you can claim the tutition break. You get a lot of money back.

You are considered a Tax Qualified Dependent if you are under 24 (so 23 and younger) and a full time student, as long as you dont provide more than half of your own support and you live with your parents.

If you are 24 or older you can be a dependent if you earn less than $3,400 (for 2007, might increase for 2008) and live with your parents and they provide more than half of your total support for the year.

If you have income you can still file your own return, you just cannot claim your own exemption. There is a check box for dependents who are filing their own return.

Once you are married your parents cannot claim you.

If you have any other questions feel free to FM me.

if you are not going to be working, why don't you try for family health plus? you can get it as an individual person then you can file your own taxes & take your own school tax credit.

You would only get the tax credit if you have income, and you wouldnt need to file if you were not working.

I did this under my step-fathers insurance a few years ago. But they did not have to claim me on their taxes. I was still able to file my own taxes and get my refund. I only had to prove that I was a full time student and use the same address as them.

I'm not sure if things changed, but they were able to cover me and I got child health plus for my twins without having to give up tax benefits.

Good Luck!
