So when FH and I were looking to register we decided Bed Bath and Beyond was perfect because you could return stuff for cash.
However, a few weeks ago we tried to return something at the BBB in Lake Grove (we happened to be in the area for other wedding stuff) and they wouldn't give us a cash refund, only store credit! They asked for the receipt and I didn't have it, just the packing slip (it was a gift, duh) and they said they'd give me a store credit.
I told them I thought the policy was cash back and they said whether or not to give cash back is at the individual store's discretion! I followed up by submitting a question on the website and they confirmed it's up to the store.
It seems like most stores will give you the cash, but just a heads up, in case you are schlepping a bunch of large items for return! I think it's a little ridiculous you wouldn't have a global policy for something like this...
Has anyone else come across this problem?

Yeah, my friends DH works for BBB and he said its totally up to the store...
The one on Erskine in Brooklyn, gives cash back... thats were I went

That happened with us....stuff that was on our registry that we returned we got $ back....if it wasn't on our registry we got store credit...

If it's on their website, and it doesn't say 'at the stores discretion' they gotta give you the $ back. All they need is your registry # which they can get.

I went to the BBB in Rego Park and got cash back for a registry gift! That is pretty dumb though!

I have a registry at BBB and just returned a bunch of stuff the other day. I did not need any of the receipts she just looked up my registry and took my ID to verify. When she was done ringing everything up she was like ok you have a credit of XXX....i was like credit or cash? and she proceeded to give me cash....which is what I was after! So maybe it is at the discretion of the store....but I have not had any problems so far. In addition when I registered in NYC I asked the girl if I get cash when I return stuff or store credit and she verified CASH!

Wow, never!! I've only had great customer service experiences with them. I've had to return a few things (even things that were broken in the mail) and they were great.
ETA: I never had receipts, just told them my wedding registry.

Rego Park. It was a LOT of cash, too.
I did have to mention that I was specifically told I could get cash back though.
