girls with LONG names

girls with LONG names

Ok, so I'm used to having a really long name...9 letter first name and 10 letter last name. The issue is that I want to take my FH's last name AND keep my last name, but his is also 10 letters! I've almost definitely decided against hyphenating (it would look kind of ridiculous), but has anyone had any issues with having a really long name? Like on legal documents, do I *have* to write down my entire legal name if I'm essentially keeping my maiden name as another middle name? Is there a way to do that? Also, I know that in NY you have a right to change your name to something that isn't yours or your FH's last name, but what I was considering doing was adding my confirmation name, which is my grandma's name, as part of my legal name (AND keeping my middle name ).

I mean, I'll basically be Gabrielle Marie Rita LongItalianName LongRussianName. AGH. Anyone have regrets with taking a crazy long name?

HAAA>.. I am totally confused about the confirmation name part that you mentioned
I would just hypenate your last name and his if you really want both names.

I have a long first and last name too... FH's last name is very long also... I am changing mine to his last name. Not keeping my maiden name

The confirmation name is a saint's name that you pick to add to your name when you have the Catholic sacrament of confirmation. I wouldn't be adding it because of the religious significance, but because I would like to have my grandma's name as part of my own, and I think it would make her very happy.

Regarding adding his last name to your own: If that's what you want to do, then do it. I plan to hyphenate, but I will continue to use my maiden name professionally. My occupation calls for people recognizing my name; Changing it completely just isn't an option.

I know it would probably make her happy, but I don't think she would be upset with you for not adding her name. While the sentiment is nice, there are other things that you can do to honor her. (Keep in mind that if you want to legally change anything other than your last name on your marriage license, you can not do so on a marriage license, you have to legally change your name either before or after with a separate legal document)
I also have a 10 letter first name and a 9 letter last name. FH's last name 8 letters (i was so happy it shrunk )
I am only taking FH's last name - i'm not going to hyphenate because it will be ridiculous.
I know its totally your decision, but i think it would be too complicated and would eventually become aggravating to have such a long name.

I have a wonderfully short first and maiden name but FHs is long and italian. i will certainly miss my current middle name but i've decided that i'm taking my maiden name as my middle name and taking FHs last name..

My first name is 9 letters, my current last name is 10, FH's last name is 4 letters. I personally would like to keep my last name but it is important to FH that I take his name and it is too long to hyphenate.. I am thinking about keeping the initial of my last name as part of my signature.

My last name now is long and FH is short, so I am looking forward to changing it! Luckily my first name is not long.

my first name is 8, both last names have 7, but they RHYME. so i sound like a loser, can't hyphenate. i have to pick 1.

Re: girls with LONG names

I actually didn't know that it required another legal document...it forces me to think about it more knowing that I can't just decide to do it the day we get the marriage license. I'm leaning towards not doing the name-add...it's just something I randomly thought of yesterday but I'm having second thoughts about making my name any longer than it needs to be.

I'm too attached to my own last name to drop it, so I think I'm going to make it a second middle name that I'll have the option of using professionally if I want to.

Both my last name and FH's is 8 letters long and my first name is 7. I'm taking his last name, and adding my current last name's initial as my middle name. Hyphenating would have been too much.

Re: girls with LONG names

My parents gave my sister and I my mom's maiden name as our second middle name. So, for example: Samantha Lucy Smith Jones. My second middle name is 7 letters long and my last name is 7 letters long. Only issue was that you kinda gotta pick one for legal documents (and doctor's charts, and employment documents, and bank records, etc etc) and stick with it, otherwise you end up in different systems multiple times! (They never put space for two middle initials on forms)

hmmits totally up to you. my first name is 7 letters and my last name is 6 letters and I am hypenating my last name to include his last name (which are 5 letters). However my middle name is 6 letters so i will have a pretty long name. But i love my last name so I am definitely keeping it! in this day and age you can do whatever you want :)
