Question for you who crate your puppies/dogs. How long do you leave them in the crate for approximately if you are at work all day? I work in the city...and FH travels a lot for work, so I can't bear the idea of leaving the pup in the crate for 11 hours (the time I leave in the am to the time I return in the pm - if FH is not home). We haven't gotten a dog just yet, and are thinking about it - but I don't know how I feel with being out of the house so long and leaving the dog alone in a crate for that amount of time...

thanks!

11 hours is too long, my dog is alone for 7 hours. the problem is as a puppy they have to be let out to go to the bathroom, they say rule of thumb is for each month they grow, its 1 hour....so at 3 months old, they can hold it for 3 hour and so forth

really? our trainer told us its double their age....so 3 months is 6 hours give or take. i used to stop home at lunch to let him out but i stopped that at about 4 montsh of age and he was always good. u

and like Barb said....DONT EVER PUNISH HIM TO HIS CRATE. you want it to be a happy place. give him a treat when he goes in there in the morning. your dog is still gonna love you so much when you get home i promise

FH had to with his male dog. He was a BAD puppy. He would pee everywhere, chew molding, fight with the other dogs, destroy things. He felt bad doing it but it was neccesary. He made it up to him by giving him a treat when he got home.

11 hours is way too long for a puppy. My dogs almost 2 and I don't leave him alone for that long. I don't know where you live, but I heard Hounds Town USA dog day care is really good. There is one in Port Jeff Station and in Ronkonkoma. We checked them out and their prices are reasonable.

We crated her at the beginning, but never for more than a couple of hours. But she's really well behaved and hasn't done anything like destroy/pee/poop since she was a few months old, so now we let her have the run of the house. (She's a year and a half.)

We did it when they were puppies. Now that they are older they have the freedom of our upstairs w all doors shut. And my big one stays in the kitchen cuz she can get rough. But yes its sooooo hard hearing them cry and seeing them in that cage. but sometimes its for their protection too!
