Michele....I have read all of the Anne of Green Gables books when I was a kid! Maybe I will read them again, how fun would that be? I have read Lovely Bones....but I want to read the Valley and Shadow of the Dolls!

100 Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) is a great book...loooong and engrossing and magical.

Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand) is next on my list. My brother who's a pretty avid reader has declared it the best book he's ever read.

ss2002 - I haven't read GGM since college , but I do remember his book being 'magical' as you said. Something in it was about an angel? I can't remember right now...

Thanks Shamma!

Jenny! Prayer for Owen Meany is soooooo sad ...wasn't it made into a movie too? That is my sisters all time favorite

Re: Give me some MUST READS!

Madam Bovary by Gustav Flaubert.

Rapture of Caanan (don't remember the author but it's an Oprah Book Club selection).

The Book of Ruth (also an Oprah selection).

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. This one is LONG, and the names are hard to keep track of--they're Russian and have like 27 letters in them!! Also, the parts involving the male characters and their business dealings can get a little dense, but the storyline about Anna herself is engrossing!

Prayer for Owen Meany is one of my all time favorites. A must read.

They did make it into a movie, but the movie was awful. Irving wouldn't even give them the title for the movie so they called it Simon Birch.

* Valley of the Dolls was great.
* The Red Tent
* Memoirs of a Geisha
* Naked & Me Talk Pretty One Day - David Sedaris (hilarious reads!)
* Friend Of The Earth - TC Boyle
* Henry & June - Anais Nin (anything by her, actually)

Don't forget...............

GOOD IN BED. Great book.
And I am a huge fan of all the JAMES PATTERSON - Alex Cross mysteries and I never saw the movies because I don't buy Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross. Should have been Sam L. Jackson!!!

If you want serious and dramatic...

Wild Swans (which is non-fiction, but reads like fiction) - it's like The Joy Luck Club but real (I also liked it better)

There's also some good historical fiction out there:

Cleopatra by Margaret George
The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone (about Michelangelo)

And I heartily second the Anne of GG & Jane Austen recs!

Shell Seakers, is a great book!

I read it years ago and just thinkgin about it makes me want to read it again. Could not put it down and it was a pretty long novel.

Re: Give me some MUST READS!

I would have to second Memoirs of a Geisha, and also reccomend Stones from the River. Both were not the easiests reads in the beginning, but they become so engrossing you don't want to put them down. They're also both the types of books that stay with you long after you've finished them.
