God Spin-off- Does anyone believe that the Bible is a literal interpretation?

Original post by dm24angel

It's only my personal opinion, so no offense to anyone, but I find it odd that so many people actually believe the bible was written as an accurate interpretation.

First, Eve didnt eat an apple, because apples cant grow in that part of the world..but beyond that, language grows with time. Something written today would no doubt be written with personal prejudice , why not something written then?

Donna, I agree that there are a lot of messages in the bible that people still go by today, that I don't feel fit into today's society, and I believe they're being taken out of context. In fact, the whole bib;e IS out of contexts because it was written thousands of years ago. It's in how you recontextualize it that determines your beliefs. I disagree with a LOT of things that people believe that they say comes from the Bible, but since there's no one who can step forward and say 'this is right and this is wrong'...how can I argue? You can present facts and arguments from within the context of the bible itself, even, but people are really firmly rooted in what they believe the bible has to say. For a lot of people, it's how they survve, it's what they live by...I mean, I think the bible kind of lays it out for everyone. you're defined a lot as much as by what you do follow as what you don't. The homosexuality topic is a good example, many people in this country believe that homosexuality is wrong, based on the bible...based on what i feel I know of god and the bible, I don't believe it's wrong...

I wanted to add that you can present me with as many examples as you want from the bible o anywhere else, but you wont convince me that homosexuality is wrong... so it goes both ways.

Well, it's interesting that you mention the 'apple' as an example because NOWHERE in the bible does it say the fruit was an apple. it just says it's a fruit!

It can't be a literal interpreation. There two entirely separate and distinct creation stories
(Were adam and eve created at the same time, or was eve created from adam's rib?) and two entirely separate and distinct Noah's ark stories. they're intermeshed, but they're totally separate. If you go through with a highlghtrer and separate the J and E voices you can see two different stories. Those are just a few examples. i'm actually really interested in this and I took an entire class on the origins of the bible..

There's a GREAT book on the origins of the bible called 'Who Wrote the bible?'

i think it was david fishman or something? I could be WAY off. All of my books are at FH's house so I can't tell you. Look it up on amazon or bn.com. It's SUCH an intriguing book.

There are three versions of the birth of Christ as well...not just one telling of the infancy narratives....

I believe the bible is a guide. It was not written by God himself, so in that respect we know it is flawed because it was written by man and man is flawed.
