God Spinoff - Creation - do you believe in Evolution?

God Spinoff - Creation - do you believe in Evolution?

DH loves to say that the story of God creating everything and everyone is just a simplistic explanation because we don't have a real one. He thinks that the scientifc theories out there regarding creation are much more credible.

But, I think that Ackham's Razor really applies to both theories:

1. Some higher being decided to create everything and everyone

2. The 'Big Bang' created everything

I honestly think that all other things being equal, both of these sound like pretty simple explanations for something very complex that we don't yet understand.

What do you think?

Evolution for me. The Big Bang is only the begining of the Evolution of man. I don't think that anything that took thousands of years and is still ongoing can be deemed simple. I belive we have only just scrathed the surface of our own existence.

So where are all the people who believe in God? Do they believe in God but not creation?

I believe in Evolution.
I am not sure about God. I don't believe in Creation... but there still might be some sort of God of force.. I am not sure.

Evolution for sure.

But I believe god set it up that way. I don't really understand why religon and evoluton have to be at odds. I think the way species have evolved is a wondrous thing and it's a vredit to god to have set it up that way. Also, with teh bible, we don't even know how long seven days was at that point, especially since several of them didn't even invovle the sun. I don't think it's meant to be literal

This I totally agree with!

So how do you resolve the Catholic belief
that God created everything with the scientific evidence that supports evolution?

It's funny you should bring this up because I was a precocious child and I went to catholic schoo for my early years and in 3rd grade I asked my teacher which was right,.the evolution and the dinosaurs taught in science class or the creationism (not in those words, probbaly) taught in religion class, and she stammered and said 'we're supposed to believe th4e version we learn in religon class' and I said 'why do you teach the other one?'
She didn't know how to answer me, of course!

Anyway I think it's something everyone has to reconcile for themselves. i think all religions are that way. There's no one who 100% believes what any religion tells them. I just don't think it's possible. There's too much contradiction, etc, so you have to find some way to reconcile it and I think the belief that evoltuon and the creation story are irreconcilable is misinformed, to put it mildly.

The insane creationisst in the south (flame away, but I think they're nuts to not teach their kids documented science) say you have to believe in the bible literally, that seven days at the creation of time when there was no sun equals seven 24 hour days as we know them and that god created every creature just as it exists now. It's so ridiculous to me because even within genesis there are two creation stories. They can't possibly be literal. Either Adam was created first or Adam and Eve were created at the same time. There's no way it could be both, so it has to be figurative in some way, or it has to have been touched by human hands. Even if the bible was divinely inspired it bears the fingerprints of the thousands who contributed to its writing. The words did not come directly from god's mouth to the page. If that were true there would be no contradictions and no significant linguistic and archaelogical evidence that points certain aprts of the bible to certain distinct cultures and 'voices'. I don't believe the bible can or should be taken literally. At the risk of offending people, I really believe that if you think the bible is 100% literal, you're completely stupid and/or ignorant to the facts. Therefore if the bible is not 100% literal, then the 7 days may or may not be literal, and they probably aren't because A) many of them happenned before the sun existed B) we have significant archaeological evidence than points to the fact that the earth is older than creationists would have us believe.

I'm ordinarily respectful of people's beliefs, but to me creationists are completely stupid.

I also wanted to add that in the poll choice A doens't adequaely describe what is referred to as 'creationism.' The Creationism I described and criticzed above erefers to the belief that the biblical seven days of creation were or werre close to a literal seven days and that god created every animal and plant on this earth in the exact from in which it exists today. There is no room for the belief that God created ceatures that would eventually by design turn into what they are today.

Creationists even explain the arachaological evidence to the contrary by saying that the dinosaur bones and such were planted there by god to test our faith in the bible.

I grew up in the South and was absolutely taught Evolution in public school. Now, I will say that most people went home and were told that what they learned in school was incorrect, but it was taught.

I don't think it is as simple as black and white. I've never understood why neither side can compromise? Now Evolution is a fact, it's a documented scientific fact. Darwin and the lesser know Alfred Russell Wallace have finely documented evolution by natural selection (survival of the fittest) as well as the many astronomers have almost completely proven the big bang theory. Now I'm not saying that God had no part in creation I believe in 'Intelligent Design' which simply means that yes evolution exsist's and that we were possibly spawned due to the Big Bang, but I believe that God had his hand in it. Why is it so hard for creationist's to except that possibility, I mean just to say that evolution doesn't exsist seems crazy to me. Evolution does exsist, and maybe God planned it that way.

I think there was some sort of creation at first, and then evolution took over from there...

I didn't mean to imply that all soutehrn schools were like this. I meant specifically the schools that refuse to teach 'evil-lution' lol. Which state is it that won't teach it in the entire state?

I am an evolutionist. I believe that the Creation story is a myth. JMHO

ETA: After reading what I wrote, I thought it sounded sort of harsh...I think that everyone has a right to believe in what they think is right and reaffirms their faith. But for me, my faith in science and the natural world are what give me comfort.

It is an age-old question that was also raised by the Vat II

There is a ton of research and essay writing among theologists about trying to persue the 'marriage' of religion and science instead of the battle between them.
