Hey! I am having the WORST pain in my jaw.. probably a cavity. I have read that your teeth may be effected by the pregnancy because calcium is going to the baby. Can you get work done when you are pregnant? Anyone go to the dentist while they were pregnant?

Re: Going to dentist while preggo?
You're not suppose to... but they have an alternate to novacain which is Litocaine (sp?) that you can use instead. I was too nervous, and I didn't want to take a chance, so I never went. But now I'm paying for it... since my PG I have 8 cavities! And had to get a root canal. My dentist said that PG doesn't cause problems with teeth, it's a myth, but I think it does since after my PG I had that many cavities. I still have yet to get all of them filled.

I went ot the dentist, but didn't take any x-rays. I also had a cavity and had to bite the bullet with no anesthetic because I was afraid to harm the baby. I know they say there are alternate things to take, but do they really know? I mean look at the people who thought that Viox was safe!!!!

I can't comment on whether or not work can get done, but want to reassure all the preggos that they can, and absolutely should, be going for their regular cleanings with the dentist!

This is what I was going to say. I have gone to the dentist for my regular cleaning and my dentist says it is very important to do while you are preggo.

Re: Going to dentist while preggo?
You absolutely can go to the dentist while preggo - actually, it is recommended you get your teeth cleaned!! No x-rays tough.
I had lots of work done while I was preggo, and my doc was completely fine with it as long as I had it done in the second trimester. I had a wisdom tooth pulled because it was decayed and if left in, might cause an infection that would be hard to treat while preggo. So I was proactive and had it out. Doc said Novocaine was fine, but I had to be sure to tell the dentist NO EPINEPHRINE in the novocaine, because that's a stimulant that prolongs the effect of the novocaine and can cross the placenta. I couldn't tell the difference. I am glad I had the work done. I also had two cavities filled while I was insured, because after I had the baby and didn't go back to work, we lost our dental insurance (we are paying Cobra now).
Definitely get it checked. Dental work is complely safe if you follow what your doc recommends.

I too just had 2 wisdom teeth pulled at 7+months. I called my OBGYN and they said novicane was Ok, as long as it did not contain epi...honestly, no difference in the feel...

Re: Going to dentist while preggo?
I had two cavities filled a few weeks ago. My doc said it was ok during the second trimester and I could have novcaine. My doc actually recommended it saying the last thing I would need is a new baby and a root canal or cap to worry about so he told me to go and to try to go early so it wouldn't hurt my back.
My morning sickness attributed to my cavaities they were way in the back and I had a 6 month prior to getting pregnant with nothing. My dentist told me if/when I decided to get pregnant again that I have to rebrush my teeth every time I get sick even if it is for a few hours straight.
Good Luck!

Re: Going to dentist while preggo?
RE: cleanings....my destist stongly urged me to come in for an extra cleaning (that way I would have had 3 during my pregnancy). Insurance covers a cleaning every 6 months so I would have to pay out of pocket for the extra. Not sure how much I trust my dentist though....I feel like I keep his practice in business any thoughts on paying for an extra cleaning?

You should go to the dentist while pregnant. Gum disease can cause early labor. I went in on my normal schedule while pregnant. If you have a problem the dentist can discuss your options. You should NOT live with severe dental pain for 9 months. He/she can help you.

Re: Going to dentist while preggo?
I just went to the dentist and I have bad gums...and the hygenist spoke to me about pregnancy gingivitis and recommended I come in 3 months instead of the usual 6. She convinced me that it was for the best b/c she didn't want my gums getting out of control due to all the hormones, etc. So I don't think your dentist is taking you for a ride. I woudl do it if you tend to have the same problems I do just to be n the safe side
