golden globes

Who knew Gwenyth Paltro was british...During the golden globes last night, she must have changed her accent several times.
UM, isn't she american?
What, does she think she's madonna now with the ever changing british accent?

I missed it, but that is SO annoying. I hate when American celebs move to Britain, and suddenly they are magically British with the full accent and all!

It happens when people move south too! My friend grew up in NJ and CT, but she went to North Carolina for college and you'd never know she was ever a Jersey Girl now!!!

The roles that I love her best in are her British roles. I don't think she was being pretentious (JMHO). Sometimes you just kinda wind up talking like the people you've been hanging out with.

I get annoyed at those certain actors - johnny depp, rachel weisz and there have been others - who often bash americans to the press as stupid or bash america and then just LOVE to come to the awards shows here and take home the gold. This country is good enough for them THEN.

just venting :)

Well, umm, actually the Golden Globes are not an American institution - they simply host the ceremony here out of convenience. The Golden Globes are given out by the HFPA - the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - which is, as I understand it, the reporters who cover American filmmaking for other countries.

But you, of course, have the right to be annoyed with what they say. That's what makes the US so great!

I think that it is only natural to pick up the accent when you have been living in an area for a lengthy period. My father is originally from Chicago, but after having lived in the South for 20yrs. he has picked up a southern accent. I have lived in NYC for 8 yrs and pretty much any trace of Southern accent has disappeared. I wasn't trying to do it, but it happened.

I thought Gweneth sounded more Irish than British...but I did pick up on something strange.

and I just have to defend Johnny Depp here, well, because I love him. I don't know if he hates Americans...I think he has big problems with American government and how it handles certain situations - and I cant' argue with him on that.
And, in his defense, last night was the first time I've seen him at an awards show in a while....he usually avoids them at all costs.

i stayed in london for a couple of weeks and after conversing with so many ppl with an accent different from my own you tend to pick it up. not on purpose or anything. it just happens. not like they're trying to denounce america from their blood.. now i just have more of a bklyn accent because i'm surrounded by brooklyn'ers.

you know what it's so easy to fall into an accent though. i have friends from the south and when i takl to them or am down there visiting I sound like them for a while! i studied abroad in spain for a year and not only did my spanish speaking ability improve, but my english accent also changed because i met so many americans from all over the country! my friends made so much fun of me when i came back because i had almost completely lost my LI accent hehe

Sasha, I sang country songs at Karaoke and that was enough for me to start saying 'y'all'.

Sorry. You're in for it. Or should I say 'Yer in fer it'?

it happens sometimes. it is really hard to change your accent after a certain age; linguists say that your accent is set by the age of 15 (forget the actual age) or so. it has to do with the way you have learned to say certain words or accent certain letters. for example, the 'r' is very prominent in irish and american english.

i lived in australia for a year and will be going back and i have to admit i picked up a slight accent and a certain rhythm to a sentence. you will be talking to someone and you hear them talking and you mimic the rhythm to the sentence. that is how children learn, by mimicing (to a point) of what they hear.

now that i am back i have been back to the NY accent. you can hear if you listen closely, that people that lived in another country before a certain age and have been in america for years that you can still hear a trace of an accent. it is also an identity thing. you may identify with one culture more.

i find accents so facinating and if i ever do my PhD i will do it on variations of english.
