Goldfish Centerpieces?

Goldfish Centerpieces?

My FH & I are discussing centerpieces, and I thought I would ask you ladies what you think of this..

FH wants to use a goldfish bowl (with goldfish inside with pretty rocks, etc) and put flowers in the top as our table centerpieces.. It sounds kind of cool, but i'm not really sold on the idea. I'm afraid that it will be more problematic than anything else (would you want to bring home a goldfish after a wedding?). I like the pretty flowers/wine bottle (we are at the Vineyard Caterers) type theme thing maybe.

Just curious what you guys think.. Am I being too uptight/conventional? you can be honest

Thank You!

I think it would be cute, as long as someone is willing to take all of the fish home afterwards. Perhaps the pet store you buy them from would be willing to take them back? You also might want to add something more to it, like flowers/candles, etc... so people DO have something to bring home. And instead of goldfish, maybe you could consider bettas? If you're having a wine theme, bettas are the right color for it!

I think it's a cute idea, I am always one for unique ideas... no cookie cutter wedding flowers for me either!

I think it's a cute idea but I don't think it would work out. A friend of mine was going to have goldfish as a favor for her daughters birthday but all the fish died before the party.

that's not a bad idea.. maybe floating flowers or something.. I'll keep that in mind. I like the suggestion about giving the fish back.

Thank you!

I was totally thinking betta fish when i read the post. They are so colorful and gorgeous and pretty easy to take care of because they dont need a filter or a heater - as long as the water is room temp.

Goldfish are alittle too fragile for such a use. Betta's are rather hardy and wouldnt flop during the reception.

I definitely agree that you shoul have more flowers invovled in the centerpeice though.

Overall I think it is a cute idea - Definitely different!

I personally LOVE that idea....

But I have to warn you...people that have done it told me that a lot of the fish died...during the reception.

Yea, i was afraid of the fish dying - how tragic Not the best way to start off a new life together - here guest stare at a dead fish all through the reception. lol.

The betta fish sound cool also. much better than goldfish hee hee.

you make good points!

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

our caterer told us that it would not be the best idea considering they might die. you do not know where your caterer is going to store them

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

I know someone who did this at a bar mitzvah and the fish all died. It was a huge hassle. If you had tons of $$$$ to spend you could hire someone to set them up in a tank that was wired to get oxygen and look over them, but I doubt that is the case. I don't think you need that on your wedding day.

Is this what you had in mind? My dad got this as a b-day gift in May and the Beta fish is still doing very well. I think it is a very unique idea. I like it!

i believe you have to worry about goldfish dying before the wedding is over and people having to look at dead fish

** i like misslinda's idea with the beta fish pictures.... borellis use to sell them...

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

Betta fish wont die -they are pretty hardy and when taken care of they live for a while - I have had one for 3 months now, one of my friends has had one for almost a year. I have heard of them living for 3 or more if taken care of. I keep mine in a large vase w/o the peace lily on top though (i have heard that it is not the healthiest for the bettas - although the do eat the root - they only do so when the are STARVING! people misunderstand that and think that the root is the only foot that they eat. No! You need to feed them betta bites twice a day.)

Also, betta's need to breathe air - their gills are not very developed so they need to rise to the top of the water and breathe. SOmetimes, when teh peace lily is too low -there is little room for the fish to reach the top for air.

Other than that - I change the water when it gets cloudy - like once a week.

You can only have one betta in bowl because they fight each other (aka fighter fish!).

Oh, also, betta's are not expensive - only a few bucks in pet stores.

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

Just a FYI- the fish can die b/c of the particular plant or flower you use, so if you want to use this idea, ask what would be a good one to use. I have a Beta that I got at a wedding 2 years ago and it is still very healthy. A Peace Lily is a safe plant to use.
Good luck!

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

I wanted the goldfish!!!!!!!!

My mom would have flipped though, and, well, it's her credit card that's paying for the centerpieces. I love the idea though.

Misslinda thanks for the pic!
Butterfly20 - where is Borellis? maybe i'll check them out..

FH comes out with some interesting things, but i really don't want a huge hassle or gross out my guests . I think i'll tell him we'll put together a trial run in our home and see how it goes after a day.

Thanks for all your comments! I'll be sure to use that specific flower when we try it out. He's been bugging me to get a pet... although this is far from the puppy he has been wanting.. lol!

Re: Goldfish Centerpieces?

What if you end up with a few dead fish? ewww...

Not to mention, if the temp. isn't right for the fish they will be uncomfortable, not very fair to them IMO.
