good greif, who knew how hard it would be...

...to VOLUNTEER.

One of my classes this semester requires that I volunteer at a non-profit of my choice for 3 hours a week.

I am having a dickens of a time (I always wanted to use that saying in a post) securing a facility to work for FREE. What the crap??

Maybe I am being too choosy... but I totally need to get this done before I leave for Italy.

Anyways, vent over. Thanks for the outlet!!

what are you looking for...can you do a nursing home or something like that..

sorry this is so difficult!

boy oh boy...this speaks volumes about our attitudes on 'volunteer' work in general...is it possible that real 'volunteers' are so few and far between that places in need HAVE to pay people to get things done

most animal shelters are always looking for volunteers. Guide dog is often looking for volunteers too.

ok well I have to laugh at myself because both of your suggestions are good but - I can't work at a nursing home or a animal shelter.

I just can't, emotionally.

see - I am too choosy.

There are no kill shelters - and often they are just looking for someone to come in and play with the cats or give attention to the dogs.

I understand though. I used to work in wildlife rehab, and everyone thought I was a freak cause I would get upset when a bird or oppossum would die (and I named them all - BAD idea)

Can you volunteer at YMCA or something?
Or a library (can you even do that)?

was it the Holtsville one? We take my niece there all the time. She loves it there.

Yeah, I think I would be that guy who has a breakdown every week. I am a bit of a animal weirdo. I couldn't take seeing those guys in shelters. Truthfully, I am getting upset thinking about it!! I am a lunatic.

hmm hadn't thought of the YMCA. No animals there, or sick people there. (can't do sick people, or hospital smell)

the library... Are libraries non-profit? I think so. Nice and quiet there. And again no animals...

I forgot about the non-profit part - I have NO idea if libraries are.

You could also volunteer for some random religious institution. That would be fun.

Yeah I can see that. I only considered volunteering at the cat section, cause at many it is just like cats chilling in a room (just like my cat does at my house).

I worked at Sweetbriar in Smithtown. It is actually the reason I decided NOT to become a vet cause if I can't handle a sparrow dying, what kind of mess would I be for a puppy!

I called guide dog last week. If you are trying to walk the kenneled dogs there is a 2-3 YEAR waiting period.
