Good Housekeeping 1955 article-Good Wife Guide-passed around Court today...LMAO!!!

* Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.
* Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.
* Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.
* Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.
* During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.
* Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.
* Be happy to see him.
* Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.
* Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
* Don't greet him with complaints and problems.
* Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.
* Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.
* Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
* Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.
* A good wife always knows her place.

How hilarious is this? There was a real article dated May 1955-one of the liasons in court passed this around to all the lawyers and we couldn't stop cracking up-no wonder why we couldn't get any cases done!

Here is the link to the article...I almost peed myself!

This actually isn't a real article - it is a mock up that started in the 80s and was passed around via fax. The intent was to show how different we have come by exaggerating how life was int he 50s.

The image that was first associated with the article is an illustratioon that was made for a 1957 issue of John Bull - two years after this article was supposed to be in Goodhousekeeping.

It's is funny, but it isn't a real article

john bull

It isn't a blanket truth in my opinion, but this was the way of thinking in years earlier than that and many areas of the country were more in tune with this thought...for example, Katharine Hepburn, who is my fav movie star, was called a lesbian and mocked because she wore only pants and refused to conform to a subservient woman role.

I do see your point about TV...but TV has to conform to society...even in Desperate Housewives, they show different sterotypical roles. Usually TV emphasizes things for entertainment, but it is a good marker to show certain norms of society!
Yeah, I think I heard that it might not have been real...but it still is funny, and WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN MY HOME!!!

I really think that the purpose is to show how far we have come, because even if you watch tv shows from the 1950's, this was their mindset! Even think about I Love Lucy, which is a GREAT show! She had an ALLOWANCE! Come on!

I actually think these kinds of jokes are a little unfortunate because they give an unfair view of what life was like. I can't say TV is an accurate representation of real life - look at Desperate housewives - how close to real life is that?

I am an officer of a 200+ member charitable quilting guild, the majority of the ladies in the guild were married in the post-war era, some during WWII and some in the 60s and later. I love talking to these women about what life was like when they were younger none have every said that they felt like they were a slave to thier husbands, very few even felt that their marriage was less than 50/50. There is about a 50/50 split between women who worked out of the home and those who stayed home.

I know the group of women I have spoken too are not as diverse a population as would be used in a study, the majority grew up in the same region in NYS but from what I have gathered this is not the mindset back then, this is our perceived idea of what life was like which is perpetuated by these exaggerated 'jokes'

I am very happy for the advances that woman have made and would never accept that I couldn't do something because of my sex.

You know on the flip side I think because of women being treated this way for so many years...they now have become '1955 husbands' so to speak.

I've seen so many marriages where husbands do it all... the kids..chores...cooking...cleaning..and the wives are princesses...doing nothing at all. And spending their husbands $. I don't think that's fair either.

Although this article is far fetched... I like the ideals of being a good wife and mother. Taking care of my home and children....and also having my husband have equal partnership and doing it all as well.

Have to agree with you. The idea that a man is the sole master is ridiculous because as we all know, the best marriages are PARTNERSHIPS. HOWEVER, thta said, I do think that the modern feminist party are leading us down the wrong road.. Yes when they began their mission was noble; create a level of equality in pay and treatment at work, etc. I used to wholeheartedly subscribe to this. But now, i think that like many modern groups, they have lost their focus and their mantras are more man-hating than making women more powerful. Most of what I hear spouted from modern feminists (like that horrific class I took last semester) is that A) men are to blame for EVEYTHING! B) if we want to be taken seriously we must always act like we have balls and not ahem..other parts that= 'weakness' because they are female. C) Treat our husbands like dirt from time to time because we ghave to show him we WILL NOT be told what to do or 'caged.'

It sounds extreme but if we look around...you do see it alot. i am guilty of doing it to my dh alot because I grew up hearing my mother spout these ideologies. Yes, some men definetly are pieces of work. However I find that most men WANT to be good husbads, fathers and providers. generally they do not wnat to control us, but take care of us.

Yes it is SUPER HARD to have a career of your own and then ahve to come home and cook and clean and take care of your munchkins. TOTALLY agree. But its no harder than when he has to do the same thing, so lets give our men some credit. The same goes for stay-at-home moms who complain they have to stay at home all day and cook and clean and then #$%^ out their husbands for not doing the same. JMO but if you are a stay-at-home mom (like I plan to be when we have kids) then that IS YOUR JOB. HIS job is going out there and busting his butt providing he is, and bringing home that abcon so that you can stay at home with your kids and have a solid family structure. Sure he could help out with a few things if you ask him nicely, but most days the cooking and cleaning would be the wife's job. Period. It drives me UP A WALL when friends of mine who stay at home complain that their husbands are beasts for not 'splitting the workload' which means not cooking or cleanign every day or every other day. I totally agree some days we may not want to clean or cook, but unles you want to order out, buck up and do it because think of it this way- How would you react if your hubby kicked up his heels, took a spot on the couch and announce he was nOT going to work today? I'll tell you what you'd do-you'd hurl that new platter you got off your registry right at him!

Ok so I won't stand on my soapbox any longer but I just wanted to point out what i am learning through my own amrriage and hope others know and if now, will learn; a good marraige takes equal partners but don't hindered by thinking you always must be completely 'equal' to your husband. It's nice to be soft once ina while and female and to be take care of because thats what he wants to do. Throw him a bone.

Such a funny article. FH came home last night at 9 PM from a long day at work, but he cooked dinner. My job was just to pick up everything he needed to cook it. So much nicer to share the responsibilities...

however, many articles I have read say that women STILL do more than 1/2 of the housework and on top of that, work full time...

That is sweet of FH! I am completely for equal: both FH and I split everything! We are very lucky girls in this day and age, as a lot of men now take on the same responsibilities as us!

I definitely see your point! Stay at home women have a job too...and being a stay at home mom is one of the hardest jobs.

I also agree that women undermine themselves when as stay at home wives/mothers, they choose not to do the cooking/cleaning, but expect their husbands to work 7 days a week to support their family and b#tch their husbands out for not splitting housework. On the flip side, I also feel that it is wrong when women who are stay at home are treated as if they have it so easy! Just because a woman is not out in the workforce does not mean that her day or concerns are less important than someone who is working full time!

Basically, my opinion is that couples have to do what is right for them, but RESPECTING EACH OTHER should never go to the wayside! This is not 1820, where that was acceptable!

MIchelle I am laughing my as$ off.
I could not make it past this one:
'Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.'

Now I'm not thinking gay as in merry but rather.... Yeah I know Scott would just LOVE that

Kathy, what guy wouldn't just love if we were 'gay' also, and not in the merry type, but more in the threesome type?

I have to go plan tomorrow's dinner! HA! I can't decide if we will order chinese or pizza -see, I am following rule #1, but according to the Modern Jewish Woman's Cookbook!

Michelle you crack me up
