Good Neighborhoods in LI

Can anyone tell me what are some of the 'better' towns. We were going to start looking in Baldwin, But I saw a post last night that mentioned that it is not that great.

Do you want better just on the south shore, near Baldwin?

I'm not too too familiar with that area, but I think Massapeque and Massapequa Park are nice.

If you are interested in good neighborhoods look at the school report cards. Good schools attract good parents which create good neighborhoods. So to speak.

We would like to stay in Nassau, but we are willing to go out to Suffolk. Just not to far out.

There are a few houses in my development (Farmingdale school district #18) that just went on the market. It's a good community with taxes not too high (considering the rest of the island) and it's in Nassau, a few miles from the Suffolk border.

Bethpage is good too.

Rockville Centre is nice
Most of Oceanside is nice
And East Rockaway
And Lynbrook
Malverne

Hewlett/Gibson area (technically Valley Stream but Hewlett-Woodmere school district which is great b/c that's a great district) that area is just west of Penninsula Blvd

Freeport - south of Atlantic Ave near the canals is nice

Parts of Baldwin near Silver Lake are nice

to be honest most neighborhoods on LI are not bad sometimes you have problems but in the nicer areas they are isolated incidents.

I live in Melville, and I really like it. You should look around here..

Malverne School District is horrible. I wouldnt want to raise a family in Malverne. I grew up in Lynbrook, and went to Valley Stream Schools. From what I know now, some of the elementry schools are still good, Like W.L. Buck District 24, and also Carbonaro, but the highschools are horrible. They have gotten worse since i was a student there.

Lynbrook schools are excellent and so are oceanside schools.

My cousins live in Malverne and the weird thing about Malverne is that the houses are really nice, the neighborhoods are cute and nice to grow up in, with a nice main street area and train station to manhattan - short ride -- but the school district is not rated the best I think because it is shared with Lakeview, there are alot of tough kids in the HS and the quality of the education is not rated great - so my cousins went to catholic schools. But, keep in mind, Malverne the town is a nice place to live.....

My FI and lives in Malvene too. My niece goes to Catholic school for the same reason that you mentioned. But the good things about Malverne is that there are one of few towns that have their own private police department, fire department and ambulance core. I love it there because it is very safe and homey.

I agree- the town of Malverne is a nice place...very cutesy and definitely safe. Have you ever eaten at the Cork and Board in town? Its a cute place...

I love that place and Connely's Station too but my favorite is actually in Lynbrook but right around the corner from FI's house, the Brick Cafe.

I've been to Connelly's but not brick house. I am not too familiar with Lynbrook. I grew up in Massapequa - see you are getting married at Manor East! Good Luck - I hear good things about the food there...my old hairdresser had her reception there.

My top suggestions:

Massapequa/Massapequa Park
Seaford
Wantagh
Bellmore
Merrick
Rockville Centre
Lynbrook
Hewlett
Hicksville
Syosset
Woodmere
Cederhurst

I live grew up in Massapequa and I loved it!! I highly recommend the area.. the schools are fantastic!!!

However, I live in Valley Stream and I think the neighborhood is not good at all!!! It's been getting worse and worse!! JMO.

Syosset
Cold Spring Harbor
Lattingtown
Port Washington
Oyster Bay
Roslyn

all of the above are on the north shore, and you will pay a pretty penny to live there, but the schools are excellent (esp Cold Spring Harbor), low crime, great parks.
