Got my marriage license!

Took the day off yesterday and went w/ FH to queensborough hall. QUite an experience, stood on line out in the snow! Anyway, filled out the form and when I got to the name change part, I started hyperventilating (well, not really). I put his name though I want to make my maiden name my middle. The woman at the desk who processed the license said I can't do that. I know she's wrong, but did I have to put that on the name change part? Or can I do that later? I just put FH's name as my new surname.
Glad that part is over, it's so weird to have the license!

Actually, the woman is not wrong about putting your maiden name as your middle. It is New York State law that you cannot do this. You MUST keep your middle name as your middle name. I know this because I work in a Town Clerk's Office, and we have had to call the Dept. of Health on this subject very recently. The only way you can do anything with your maiden name is to keep it, or hypenate it.

Ok...I found out for you. You still can't do it. They only way you could legally do it is to go and get a legal name change. The rules s**k sometimes.

So the only way I could maintain having my maiden name at all is to hyphenate it? Grrr. that's annoying. My maiden name is simple but FH's is Italian, difficult to spell and pronounce.
And I'm an attorney so whatever I do, I have to change it w/ the bar, too, more paperwork.

It feels so official now! The Town Clerk of Hempstead gave us a goodie bag of samples as a gift (sample size Secret anti-perspirant, Tide, Downy, Gladware storage container and Pepto-Bismal). I thought that was nice of them! I am changing my last name to my FH's surname but will still use my last name for work.

We did go to 120-55 queens blvd. this week is bad b/c of valentine's day. The line was out the door, outside, but most people are there for other stuff, so they pulled the marriage license people out of the line after awhile. It took an hour for the whole process. Not too bad but it's probably going to get worse as it gets closer to valentine's day. I would go as early as possible.

It does feel official now!! SPoke w/ FH, i'm going to be maiden-fh's name. Done deal.

Oh NO!! You can't use your maiden name as your middle name??? For real?? That is awful. Now I don't know what to do. My maiden name is too long to hypenate, but I don't want to give it up entirely.
