Gotta love my mom!
Let me start by saying I really do love my mom and she's super-cool. But I am just jaw-droppingly floored at our conversation yesterday.
She finally gave me a tentative guest list. It had 180 people on it!! (FILs gave me 73.) I read the list and had no idea who half the people were on it. Then she starts telling me about all the neighbors she has to invite, because if she invites one and not another, they'll be hurt. Ditto for my brother's friends' parents, distant relatives, old neighbors, etc.
Then she gets into kids. Tells me we have to invite a neighbor's kid. I don't see why (she's about 4 or 5) and my mom says 'they take her everywhere. They'll be hurt if she's not invited.' Then she says that since we have to invite her, we also have to invite another neighbor's 3 young kids or it'll be hurtful. (!!)
SO! I tell her, 'Mom, this is my wedding and I really don't know most of these people, or I don't care about many of them.'
Here's the jaw dropping part.
She says, 'No! It's OUR wedding-- your dad and mine. We're the ones throwing it, so we get to decide who to invite. It's for us to share with our friends. And we'll let you have some of your friends there, too.'
I swear I sat there trying to explain to her that, while I understood that she had a say in who to invite, of course, it was still MY wedding, not hers. But no. She remained convinced that this was my parents' wedding and that all the decisions were really theirs because they're paying for most of it.
My sister got on the phone, heard all this from my mom, and immediately said, 'That's it. I'm eloping.'
WAIT, IT GETS BETTER. So now my mom said, oh, then I have to invite so-and-so and so-and-so, too, because I won't be able to invite them to your sister's wedding.
