Re: Gowns dilemma
6 months is usually the most it will ever take a gown to come in... then I'd allow 2 months for alterations at the most!
But you can start shopping to get an idea of what you like and price points.

Re: Gowns dilemma
I would say no more than a year in advance. Styles change and our body shapes may change (lose weight, gain muscle) etc and honestly after going thru it you second guess yourself so often that i think a year is more than ample time. I ordered mine in August, it came in the first week of april and i started alts in june and my wedding was june 28th.

I couldn't wait either. I started in July, and surprise surprise, I found my dress the first time I went!!! The salon said my dress would take almost a year to come in anyway since it needs some special work done (for the 'girls' if ya know what I mean... )

I say if you love it, go for it. But then again, I am VERY impulsive, most people are not like me. What designer is it? Maybe you could wait and see if there is a trunk sale and then wait and buy the dress then to get the discount. I got mine at a trunk sale and saved 15%!

Depends what designer you are interested in, Eve of Milady/Amalia Carrara take a year. I say about a year and a half before is perfect to start, so you can comfortably shop around for a few months and then order when you are 100000000% positive. With time to spare

It truley does depend on the designer. Mine takes up to a year and then you have to add in alternations and customizing it (if you want). I ordered mine already, I just loved it. I tried on about 30 dresses and just kept going back to that one.

Re: Gowns dilemma
bridal salons have said to order 10 months ahead. some girls on here said that was still PLENTY of time. i guess around a year before. lots of girls start earlier tho.

Not true Maggie dresses take about 8 months! I went a year before so I would have more then enough time to get the dress in and alterate. They also say to tell the dress place a month in advance.

Re: Gowns dilemma
Try to wait until you are at the year mark at least. A few years back many brides I had seen run into second guessing and changing their minds because they ordered their dress WAY to far in advance.

Re: Gowns dilemma
i think 1 year is a good time frame - i ordered mine in Jan for my December wedding - it came in very early - in May actually....
and as far as gowns taking a long time to come in - i think that it depends on the bridal salon - i was pressured to hurry and order my demetrios dress (so that it would be in for my wedding) and it arrived within 4 months so i think they just wanted to make the sale and make me feel like i was cutting it close - now i just ordered a melissa sweet dress for my reception a few weeks ago (my wedding is in like 4 months) and they are rushing the order it so i get the dress in time to do alterations (fingers crossed it comes in time!)
i think you can start looking whenever you want - but i dont think you have to order or get serious until about 1 year before
