grad school question

hello. so i am applying to UNC schools for school counseling programs. i got back my first (and hopefully not only) invitation for an interview (yay). now, they gave me 2 dates that i can interview on...feb 10 and march 3. is there a more strategic date i should pick? would it be better to pick the earlier vs the later for any reason? i wish i knew when other interviews might take place, bc fi does not fancy driving back and forth to NC over and over... suggestions? thanks~lacey

Re: grad school question

I don't think school interviews are really like job interviews in that first or last interview helps. Even then, some believe first interview is best (when the interviewers are most fresh), some believe last interview is best (recency theory so they remember most about the last).

For grad school, I really don't think it matters. Most of the admissions criteria are pretty black and white and the interview is only a small portion.

Good luck!

Is it rolling admission? If not and the school doesn't make decisions untill all interviews are completed, it shouldn't matter which date you pick.

they have a deadline (feb 1) but they accept applications until all spots are filled (rolling?). so i don't know really.

i was thinking march 3 bc unc charlotte will most likely do theirs on march 2 or 3, and they are only 2 hours apart...but then i was afraid they might conflict. grr. i am being presumptuous anyways, i may only get this one invite, ya never know. ~lacey

Re: grad school question

'We begin looking at applications in January. Promising candidates will be asked to attend interviews scheduled in February and March. We will admit 20-25 students to start in summer or fall. We will keep an open, rolling enrollment until the seats are filled. You are advised to get your application in early, prior to January 1st. We average 40-45 applicants per year. ' -app state website.

so i should def take the early interview, even if it means possible multiple road trips...right? ~lacey

Yes. You want as few seats filled by the time you interview so you have the best chance of getting in. Good luck!

ahh. ok so this is real now. any interview tips? lol. i am so nervous. i've never interviewed for anything but my daycare job, which doesn't count bc they hire you as long as you are breathing. i feel unprepared to say the least. ~lacey

Re: grad school question

1. Know about the program.

2. Know why you want to get into that program at that school.

3. Know why you want to be a school counselor - and I'm sick of teaching in a classroom shouldn't be the answer (having just graduated from an MS in counseling, there are way too many people who have this as their reason!)

GOOD LUCK!

Also research professor's research interests and see if any are in line with what you are interested in. Think about what has drawn you to want to do this job and qualities you bring to it that may make you stand out...I have my EdM in Counseling and am in a doc program now for Counseling...Good Luck!! FM me if you want.
