Re: graduation gift
I say a general g/c (like amex or visa) this way they can use it anywhere or cash in a card.
ETA : and yes $50 to $100 sounds good depending on how close you are to them.

Re: graduation gift
We put together a basket for FH's cousin, but we got a little excited since she was attending our alma mater!
Not only did we include little things (a wastepaper basket, desk stuff like a stapler and pens, fun tak (for hanging up posters) but also since we knew the area having graduated from that college, we included takeout menus from some of the local places and we also got some gift cards from places like starbucks, blockbuster, and barnes and noble which are all near campus.
But this gift was also from like 4 of us so it was much bigger.
Our other default gift is a BBB gift card (if they are going to be dorming). Money is always good, but if I was a HS grad, it would probably be spend over the summer going out with friends lol I have found the gift cards are much more appreciated when they are laying out hundreds for dorm room supplies.

Re: graduation gift
$50 is good- if u are really close w/ them u might want to give more but $50 is a good amount.
when my cousin graduated high school i bought her a little book about the college she was going to. It had tons of info about the school, but it also listed all of the best restaurants/takeout places and bars that allow underage drinking lol

Re: graduation gift
Just got back from the grad party. The kid made almost 2k! Most people gave her $50 unless they were family.
The best gift she got was a scrapbook w gift cards to local boston places since her school was there, 'coupons' for home cooked meals, unlimited laundry amongst other things and a listing of free admission days to museums etc! It was so thoughtful.

What a good idea! We ended up giving him a check... I made sure to write that it's not BEER MONEY! haha I hope he got some money!
