Gratuity

I was just curious if anyone has heard of tipping the priest who marries you? I was recently told that you should, but have never heard of this. If so, how much is appropriate?

Re: Gratuity

My church actually tells you the recommended gratuity. It might be different for you. For mine it's $125 I think but $100 would probably be fine. (I'm also paying a membership fee, a cleaning fee and an organist)

Re: Gratuity

Don't believe you're supposed to tip the priest. I know you're supposed to tip altar servers and musician (if you want to), but not the priest.

Re: Gratuity

yeah, dont think your supposed to tip the priest.....just the alter boys and girls. The money you are paying already to get married at the church or to getting married outside the church is a donation for the church.

Like my priest's donation is $500.00. I dont think I will pay him more than that.

Re: Gratuity

it depends on the church . i was told by my church that i only have to tip the alter boys. what we are paying them covers everthing else. you should call and ask them.

Re: Gratuity

We are not paying to use the church because FH is a member, so we will be giving a donation to the church. We probably will, FH's pastor is so sweet and he very helpful in answering any of our questions.

Re: Gratuity

we already have to make a 'donation' to the church and my church tells you that you only have to tip the alter servers $25 each on the day of your wedding. I also remember a bride on this website said that it is bad etiquette to tip a priest...Makes sense when you think about it...

Re: Gratuity

I didn't tip the priest or organist. We only had a ceremony so no alter servers were needed. I paid the church their fee and out of that the organist received $150 - I didn't feel anything extra was necessary. If I had alter servers, I would have tipped them something.

I never heard of tipping the priest or anyone else beyond alter servers.
