That was pretty interesting.

I know that when I first got engaged, I bought a book similar to that to keep myself grounded.

very interesting and SOO totally true!! i' ve been married almost 2 years, and since being married its REALLY becomon obvious to me that the wedding is only ONE day. i think there is too much focus put on the party, whether future brides admit it or not. 'they' have us so convinced that you have to have this huge party to be married...
we had a simple wedding, spent about 15K on it... and a few months later went to a wedding where they spent 50 K- and today, we're JUST as married as the couple who had the 50 K wedding. ( and the friends who were at both say they enjoyed ours more because it wasn't a big 'show'. my sister got married in january in a courthouse wedding, and is going to have a BBQ reception this summer. a friend commented that the whole thing seemed ' weird' but why?!? since when have we become so brainwashed that we have to have this big, huge 'DAY' for the marriage to be 'right' and 'Real'?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'd love to read it but I'll feel bad about all the hoopla I already bought into. haha.

i truly believe it is more to marriage than having a big party - and i am more excited about marriage than the wedding.. but still i cannot picture spending less than 18,000 (it could have been 15,000 if i started smarter) and even this is a lot i think but still way less than many others. its hard ...not that i want to spend 18000 but everytime i do the math i cant make it work ...

she sums it up the best in her last comment:

Weddings are really about family and love and deep, deep matters; they are not, in the end, about what kind of dress you wore, what kind of flowers you chose, and whether or not you gave your guests personalized M&Ms to take home at the end of the night.

So to all the BTBs - that would be my best advice as well. All the little details don't really matter, your guest will notice the love and committment between you and your DH, not if your napkins match your BM dresses.

I know we can all get swept away with it all, I try to bring back a sense of reality. I am always hoping I dont come off as too cynical!!!

Interesting. Certainly makes me glad we chose a $10K budget for the wedding! Not including the honeymoon, but that's also our vacation for the year, and our first real long vacation together anyway. Anyway, we're probably going to go a little over, but I've tried to keep my spending to the things I really want and that I think will really matter and make a difference to the wedding. It's amazing how fast all those little extras add up!
