Groom and Bride- Welcome Speech?

I'm not much for public speaking but I have heard that couples do welcome speeches a the beginning of the reception? I have never seen this done at a wedding and was just curious if anyone here was doing it? If so, more power to you!

Or who has done these type of speeches at the RD and what did you say? We obviously have to thank our guest for coming.
