how large should a grooms cake be? and if you get a grooms cake, does that mean your regular wedding cake should be smaller? i'm saving up to hopefully get that ace of cakes guy to do FH's grooms cake as a surprise, but its going to cost quite a lot. good thing i've got time to save.

Re: grooms cake?
I ordered a groom's cake for the dinner we had the night before the wedding. I thought it would be overkill at the wedding, because our guests were already getting wedding cake and a dessert plate.
I got a chocolate cake with oreo filling from Audrey's. I think I paid $100 and it fed more than 50 people and we had leftovers.
If you are going to do a special, over the top, cake, why not have it at the rehearsal dinner? It will stand out there more than at the wedding (with everything else going on) and it will cost you a lot less.
Just an idea.
By the way, I LOVE that show!

Re: grooms cake?
Just a thought, but have you considered a cigar bar for ur FH? My fiance saw one on 'My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding' and he's been talking about it ever since. I asked if he would want a grooms cake, and he said no b/c we're having viennese hour and he thought it was dessert overkill, so i'm surprising him with the Cigar Bar. I know he's going to flip when he sees it.. from what I've read on here most men go nuts for this stuff. Not sure how much cakes run, but cigar bars go from $450-$1000 depending on who you go with.

Re: grooms cake?
I am doing our groom's cake at RD and not reception. I think it will be really cute and an appropriate design for the amount of people attending!
I am getting him the golf bag

You can do either, in the south it is traditionally at the wedding, but practicality has taken over and we tend to do it at the RD here.
