Its more of a southern thing, from what ive seen. Its basically the idea that the pretty cake that you cut is for the bride, and the groom has a cake that is cute/fun/risk-e/different.
Think steal magnolias where the grooms cake was a bleeding armidillo with grey icing!
You DONT have to have one.

Re: Grooms Cake?
I didn't get one, and DH would have seen it as a waste of money, but that's just him. Other brides have gotten their DH 'grooms cake' and their DH's loved it. You would know if your DH would really like one, if you think he would like it then as a gift you can get it for him. But it is not a 'must'

Re: Grooms Cake?
A groom's cake is definitely not a requirement. If I asked him he would say it was a waste of money HOWEVER- I wanted to do something special for him so I am getting him a Surprise Yankee Stadium Groom's cake. But again, it is extra money and generally unnecessary. I have never been to awedding with a Groom's Cake.

Re: Grooms Cake?
Typically brides get the cake for the rehearsal dinner - at least as far as I've seen here in LI. There is no need for another cake at the reception - especially since most ppl do Vienesse Hour too.
thats what I did...got a surprise shea stadium cake for my dh...he almost dropped dead when he saw it! pics in album under other wedding stuff

i am having one for my FH and surprising him by having it placed next to our wedding cake at our reception. it will be a mr. met cake.. he wants the real mascot at our wedding but he's a little too pricey so i'm sure he'll enjoy this!

If only my FH were a Mets Fan instead of a Yankee Fan!
That is why I am having Mets cupcakes made- I dont want to overshadow his surprise Yankee Cake but I want to remind him that I am still a Met fan!

I will also be placing FH's grooms cake next to our wedding cake for the reception. I want to get him an xbox 360 cake since he plays it so much lol

Re: Grooms Cake?
You def don't HAVE to. But it's basically a cake that is created in the shape of something that FH really likes- a sports team, video game, etc.
I'm def going to get FH one.

Re: Grooms Cake?
I love vanilla and white cakes and FH loves chocolate - as much as possible! So I want to get a groom's cake that's a chocolate mud type cake. I'm still thinking about it though but I have some ideas.

Re: Grooms Cake?
I'm probably going to get him a cake for the rehersal dinner. He loves to play the guitar, so I'm thinking I'll do one in the shape of a guitar. It's gonna be a cute surprise b/c he has no clue about 'groom's cakes.' Hahaha
you don't have to have one - its just something extra some brides do for their husbands usually at the rehearsal dinner...

i want to have one to surprise FH, but he's a pastry chef so he's always wanted to make it himself.

Re: Grooms Cake?
I wouldn't say that is a Southern thing because most of my family are New Yorkers and we all have had one. It not something you have to have. Its just a cute well of letting something be all about you husband that day since so much attention is on the Bride. the Grooms cake displays his hobbies, favs or just something sentimental about him. Something that represents who he is as a person from the look of the cake down to the flavor. In caribbean cultures the traditional 'black cake' which is a rum filled fruit cake is often used as a groom's cake as well.
